Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: During the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), locusts became scarce. He asked about the locusts, but he was not told anything about them (that is, no report came from anywhere that locusts were found there). He became worried about this. He sent someone to Yemen, someone to Syria and someone to Iraq, asking: Are any locusts seen there? The narrator says: The rider from the direction of Yemen came to him with a handful of locusts, and he placed them before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw them, he said the takbir (Allahu Akbar) three times and then said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Allah Almighty created a thousand kinds of creatures, six hundred kinds of which are in the sea and four hundred kinds on land. The first thing among these nations to meet destruction will be the locusts; when they are destroyed, then (the destruction of the rest) will follow just as beads scatter when the thread breaks."
Abu Ya'la recorded it in al-Kabir, and its chain contains Ubayd bin Waqid al-Qaysi, who is da'if (weak).
