Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were sitting on a mat when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be tribulations." The people submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! What should we do then?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched out his blessed hand towards the mat, took hold of it and said: "Do like this." One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned before the people that soon there would be tribulations, and many people did not hear it. Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to those people): "Do you not hear what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is saying?" The people asked: "What has he (peace and blessings be upon him) said?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be tribulations." The people submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! What will become of us then? And what should we do?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Return to your first state of affairs."
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Abdullah bin Salih, who has been declared trustworthy, and there is weakness in him. The remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.
