وَعَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ : إِذَا وَقَعَ النَّاسُ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ فَقَالُوا : اخْرُجْ ، لَكَ بِالنَّاسِ أُسْوَةٌ فَقُلْ : لَا أُسْوَةَ لِي بِالشَّرِّ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ خَدِيجُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَثَّقَهُ أَحْمَدُ وَغَيْرُهُ ، وَضَعَّفَهُ جَمَاعَةٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When people fall into tribulation, they will say: "Come out! You have an example in the people." Then you should say: "I have no example to follow in evil."
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration; its chain contains Khudayj bin Mu'awiyah, whom Ahmad and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), and a group declared him da'if (weak).
