Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) will continue to ward off (punishment or displeasure) from the one who says it, as long as those who say it take care that, in whatever worldly gain comes to them, their religion remains safe. But when those who say this word do not care how much harm is done to their religion for the sake of the safety of their worldly life, and still they say La ilaha illallah, it will be said to them: 'You are lying.'"
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Ajlan, who is extremely da'if (weak).
