Abu Awn al-Ansari narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "Will you not desist from what has reached me about you?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) offered him some excuse. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Woe to you! I too remember (the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) and I heard it, and it is not as you heard it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Soon a ruler will be killed, and those who rush towards evil will rush towards it.' I am the one who will be killed, not Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), for Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed by a single man, whereas a crowd will gather against me."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
