Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11977

Abu Rashid narrates: Some men from the people of Basrah came to Ubayd bin Umayr and said: "Your brothers from the people of Basrah have asked you about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said: "Have you come only for this purpose?" They replied: "Yes." So he recited this verse: "That is a nation which has passed away. It will have what it earned, and you will have what you earn, and you will not be asked about what they used to do."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
