Al-Qasim states: Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The one who learns the Qur'an but does not act upon it is like the sweet basil (rayhanah), whose fragrance is pleasant but which has no taste. The one who acts upon the Qur'an but does not recite it is like the date, whose taste is good but which has no fragrance. The one who acts upon the Qur'an and recites it is like the citron, whose taste is good and whose fragrance is also good. And the one who neither recites the Qur'an nor acts upon it is like the colocynth (hanzalah), whose taste is bitter and whose smell is foul.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is munqati' (broken).
