Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11664

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) states: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke about the trials (fitan) and described how great and severe they would be. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the way out of them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Book of Allah. In it are the accounts of those before you, news about those who will come after you, and the decisive word on your affairs. Whoever abandons it out of arrogance, Allah Almighty will destroy him, and whoever seeks guidance in anything other than it, Allah Almighty will lead him astray. It is the firm rope of Allah Almighty, the wise remembrance and the straight path. It is the one which, when the jinn heard it, they said: 'We have heard a Qur'an; it is a wondrous thing.' It is that about which tongues do not falter, and it does not grow old from being read abundantly."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Amr bin Waqid, who is matruk (abandoned).
