Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first things Allah Almighty created were the Pen and the fish. The Pen asked: What shall I write? Allah Almighty said: Everything that will come to be until the Day of Resurrection." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Nun. By the Pen and what they (the angels) write." 'Nun' means the fish, and the Pen means the Pen.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. He says: No one narrated this narration from Hammad bin Zayd as a marfu' hadith except Mu'ammal bin Isma'il.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The narrator Mu'ammal is thiqah (trustworthy) but makes many mistakes; Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared him thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared him da'if (weak). The remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
