Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11410

Al-Aswad bin Hilal relates: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about this verse: "And whoever is saved from the stinginess of his own soul, it is those who are the successful." The man said: I am a person who is unable to let anything go out from me, and I fear that the ruling of this verse applies to me as well. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have mentioned miserliness, and miserliness is an evil thing; but what Allah Almighty has mentioned in the Qur'an is not what you have described. What it means is that you set out for the wealth of someone else (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) the wealth of your brother, and consume it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, who is da'if (weak).
