Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11390

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting this verse on the pulpit: "And for the one who fears standing before his Lord there are two gardens." The narrator said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Even if he has committed zina, even if he has stolen?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse a second time: "And for the one who fears standing before his Lord there are two gardens." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Even if he has committed zina, even if he has stolen?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse a third time: "And for the one who fears standing before his Lord there are two gardens." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Even if he has committed zina, even if he has stolen?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! Even if the nose of Abu al-Darda' is rubbed in the dust (that is, however much he dislikes it)."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Tabarani's wording is: It is reported about Amr bin al-Aswad that he came out of his house, and Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) also came out of his house; both of them were heading for the mosque. Amr was behind Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) was reciting: "And for the one who fears standing before his Lord there are two gardens." Amr asked: "Even if that person has committed zina, even if he has stolen?" Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated this verse two or three times, then he said: "Yes! Even if your nose is rubbed in the dust, O Amr!" Then he said: "Perhaps, O Amr, you feel some unease in your mind. I have told you only what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me." After this the narrator mentioned the hadith as before, and in it are these words: "O Uwaymir! Even if your nose is rubbed in the dust." The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
