Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11362

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Paradise and Hell boasted against each other. Hell said: 'O my Lord! The tyrants, the arrogant kings and the nobles will enter me.' Paradise said: 'The weak, the poor and the needy will enter me.' Allah Almighty said to Hell: 'You are My punishment; through you I will punish whomever I will.' And He said to Paradise: 'You are My mercy, which is vaster than everything.' And each of you two will be filled. Then Allah Almighty will cast its people into Hell, and it will ask: 'Are there more?' Allah Almighty will again cast (people) into it, and it will ask: 'Are there more?' Until Allah Almighty comes to it and places His foot upon it; then it will begin to contract and will say: 'Enough! Enough!' As for Paradise, as many people as Allah wills will remain in it, then Allah Almighty will create for it as many creatures as He wills." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this narration is recorded in the "Sahih", referred to the hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), because Hammad bin Salamah narrated from Ata' bin al-Sa'ib before he (Ata') suffered from ikhtilat (deterioration of memory).
