Majma al-Zawaid 11203 — The tafsir of the story of the slander
وَعَنْ قَتَادَةَ فِي قَوْلِهِ - تَعَالَى - وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِي مَا أَفَضْتُمْ فِيهِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ قَالَ : هَذَا فِي شَأْنِ عَائِشَةَ - رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا - وَفِيمَا قِيلَ : كَادَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَنْ يَهْلِكُوا فِيهِ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ جَيِّدٌ .
Qatadah, regarding this statement of Allah Almighty, said: (Allah Almighty says:) "And had it not been for the grace of Allah Almighty upon you and His mercy, a great punishment would have touched you for what you were engaged in." Qatadah said: This was concerning Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and it has been said that the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were close to being destroyed over this matter. Its chain is jayyid (good).
