Majma al-Zawaid 11199 — The tafsir of the story of the slander
وَعَنْ قَتَادَةَ فِي قَوْلِهِ لَوْلَا إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ كَذَّبْتُمْ وَقُلْتُمْ : هَذَا كَذِبٌ بَيِّنٌ ، وَلَعَمْرِي أَنْ تَكْذِبَ عَلَى أَخِيكَ بِالشَّرِّ إِذْ سَمِعْتَهُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ وَأَسْلَمُ مِنْ أَنْ تُذِيعَهُ وَتُفْشِيَهُ وَتُصَدِّقَ بِهِ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَإِسْنَادُهُ جَيِّدٌ .
Qatadah said regarding this statement of Allah Almighty: (Allah Almighty says:) "Why, when you heard it," that you should have denied it and said that this is a clear lie. By my life, when you hear something evil about your brother, declaring it false is better for you and safer than spreading it, publicising it and believing it.
