Abu Khalaf, the freed slave of Banu Jumah, narrated that he went with Ubayd bin Umayr to visit Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) by the canopy of Zamzam, as there was no shaded place in the mosque other than it. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Welcome, O Abu Asim" (meaning she said this to Ubayd bin Umayr). "What keeps you from visiting us, or from calling on us for a while?" He said: "I feared that I might weary you." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "You are not one to do that." Ubayd bin Umayr said: "I have come to ask you about a verse in the Book of Allah: how did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recite it?" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "Which verse?" He recited: 'alladhina yu'tuna ma ataw' (those who give what they give), or is it 'alladhina ya'tuna ma ataw' (those who do what they do)? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "Which of the two is dearer to you?" I said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, one of them is dearer to me than the world and everything in it." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Which of the two?" He said: "These words: 'alladhina ya'tuna ma ataw.'" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I bear witness that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite it this way, and this is how it was revealed." (The narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "This is how it was revealed, and this is how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite it, but the spelling (hija') is a matter of one letter."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki, who is da'if (weak).
