Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Once I passed by Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque and greeted him with salam. He raised his gaze and looked at me but did not return my greeting. I came to the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "O Commander of the Believers! Has some new ruling come about in Islam?" I said this twice. He said: "No. What has happened?" I said: "Nothing, except that a short while ago I passed by Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque and greeted him; he looked at me fully but did not return my greeting." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), called him and said: "Why did you not return your brother's greeting?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I did no such thing." I said: "Yes, you did." The narrator said: Until he swore an oath and I swore an oath too. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, that may be so (that it happened). I seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty and repent to Him. When you passed by me, I was thinking about something I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and whenever it comes to my mind, it covers my heart and my sight." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will tell you about it. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned to us the most important supplication (but did not tell us the supplication); then a Bedouin came to him and his attention was taken up by him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and I followed him. I feared that he would reach his house before me, so I struck my feet hard on the ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned toward me and asked: "Who is it? Is it Abu Ishaq?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter?" I said: "Nothing. By Allah! Just now you mentioned the most important supplication, then a Bedouin came to you and your attention turned to him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is the supplication of Dhu al-Nun when he was in the belly of the fish (whose words are): 'There is no god but You; You are free of every imperfection; indeed, I have been one of the wrongdoers.'" (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "Any Muslim who supplicates to his Lord with these words regarding any matter, his supplication will be answered."
(Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Tirmidhi recorded the last part of this narration.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Sa'd, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
