Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Arbad bin Qays bin Jazi bin Khalid bin Ja'far bin Kilab and Amir bin al-Tufayl bin Malik both came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah. They both came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated, and they both sat down in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Amir bin al-Tufayl said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), if I accept Islam, what will you assign to me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will have everything that the Muslims have, and everything that is binding upon them will be binding upon you." Amir said: "If I accept Islam, will you give me the rule after you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will have everything that the Muslims will have, and everything that is due from the Muslims will be due from you." Amir said: "If I accept Islam, will you give me the rule after you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will have everything that the Muslims have, and everything that is binding upon the Muslims will be binding upon you." Amir said: "If I accept Islam, will you give me the rule after you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That will be neither for you nor for your people, but you will have the reins of the horses." He said: "Even now the reins of the horses of the region of Najd are in my hands. Assign to me the rule of the countryside, and keep for yourself the rule of the towns." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Then Arbad and Amir went out from there. Amir said: "O Arbad, I will keep Muhammad's attention on me by talking to him, and you attack him with the sword, for when you have killed him, the most people will do is accept blood money; they will not be willing to go to war, so we will give them the blood money." Arbad said: "Very well." Then the two of them came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Amir said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), get up and come with me; I want to talk to you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went with him. The two of them came to a wall, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood with him and began talking. Meanwhile, Arbad drew his sword, and when he put his hand on the hilt of the sword, his hand dried up on the hilt of the sword. Arbad was slow in striking. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned and looked, saw what they were doing, and left the two of them. When Amir and Arbad left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and set off, they were still on the stony ground (harrah) of Banu Waqim; there they both halted. Then Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to the two of them. He said: "O enemies of Allah! Look to yourselves." Amir said: "O Sa'd, who is this?" Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is Usayd bin Hudayr, the scribe." Then the two of them went on until, when they reached the place called al-Raqm, Allah Almighty sent a thunderbolt upon Arbad which killed him. Then Amir went on from there and reached al-Khuraym, where Allah Almighty afflicted him with an ulcer. He stayed the night at the house of a woman of Banu Salul. He would pass his hand over that ulcer in his throat and say: "A gland like the gland of a camel, appearing in the house of a Saluli woman." That man did not want to die in that woman's house. Then he mounted his horse and spurred it on until he died on the horse during the journey back. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse about the two of them: "Allah knows what every female carries, and how much the wombs fall short, and how much they increase," up to: "And they have no protector besides Him (Allah)." The narrator says: By the command of Allah Almighty, angels used to protect Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Then after that the narrator mentioned Arbad and how he was killed, and then recited this verse: "It is He who shows you lightning, causing fear and hope," up to: "And He is severe in seizing."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir he recorded something similar, except that there he recorded these words: When the two of them went back from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Amir said: "By Allah! I will surely gather horsemen and foot soldiers against you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty will not let you do so." The chain of both narrations contains a narrator, Abd al-Aziz bin Imran, and he is da'if (weak).
