Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him) had an adopted brother. One day he asked him: 'What took away your eyesight, and why has your back become bent?' He said: 'As for the loss of my eyesight, it went because of weeping over Yusuf, and as for the bending of my back, it is because of grief over my son Yamin.' Sayyiduna Jibril came to Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him) and said: 'O Ya'qub, Allah Almighty sends you His greeting of peace and says to you: Are you not ashamed to complain about Me to someone other than Me?' Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him) said: 'I only complain of my distress and my grief to Allah Almighty.' Sayyiduna Jibril said: 'O Sayyiduna Ya'qub, Allah Almighty knows best what you are complaining about.' Then Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him) said: 'O my Lord! Do You not have mercy on an old man? You took away my eyesight and You bent my back; now return to me my flower, Yusuf, so that I may smell him before I die; then, O my Lord, do with me whatever You will.' Sayyiduna Jibril came to him and said: 'O Sayyiduna Ya'qub, Allah Almighty sends you His greeting of peace and says to you: Receive glad tidings and let your heart rejoice. By My honour and majesty, had the two of them died, I would have brought them both back to life for your sake. Prepare food for the poor, for the most beloved of My servants to Me are the poor. Do you know why I took away your eyesight and bent your back, and why the brothers of Yusuf did to Yusuf what they did? The reason is this: you once slaughtered a goat, and a poor man came to you who was fasting, and you did not give him anything of that goat's meat to eat.' The narrator says: After that, whenever Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him) was about to eat his morning meal, he would order a caller (to announce): 'Whoever among the poor wants breakfast, let him come and have breakfast with Sayyiduna Ya'qub.' And if Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him) was fasting, he would order the caller, and he would announce: 'Whoever among the poor is fasting, let him break his fast with Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him).'"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. He recorded it from his teacher Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Bahili al-Basri, and he is extremely da'if (weak).
