Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11046

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: (Allah Almighty says:) "And they intended what they could not attain." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A man named al-Aswad had intended to kill the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is what is meant here).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who had become confused (ikhtilat) in memory.
