قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى : وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّاتِهِمْ .
The saying of Allah the Exalted: "And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants"

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - أَخَذَ الْمِيثَاقَ مِنْ ظَهْرِ آدَمَ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - بِنَعْمَانَ - يَعْنِي : عَرَفَةَ - ، فَأَخْرَجَ مِنْ صُلْبِهِ كُلَّ ذُرِّيَّةٍ ذَرَأَهَا ، فَنَثَرَهُمْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ [ كَالذَّرِّ ] ، ثُمَّ كَلَّمَهُمْ قِبَلًا ، فَقَالَ : أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ قَالُوا بَلَى شَهِدْنَا أَنْ تَقُولُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَذَا غَافِلِينَ أَوْ تَقُولُوا إِنَّمَا أَشْرَكَ آبَاؤُنَا مِنْ قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّيَّةً مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ أَفَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty took the covenant from the back of Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) at Arafah. He brought forth from his loins every descendant of his whom He was to create, and scattered them before Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) like ants. Then He came before them and spoke to them, and said: 'Am I not your Lord?' They said: 'Yes, we bear witness.' (The Lord said:) 'Lest you say on the Day of Resurrection: We were unaware of this; or you say: Our forefathers associated partners before, and we were only descendants after them; will You then destroy us for what the people of falsehood did?'"
