Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11016

Sayyiduna Amr bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We took part in the expedition of the year of the Conquest with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we were more than a thousand men. Allah Almighty granted the conquest of Makkah and Hunayn. Then, between Hunayn and Ta'if, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a tree on which weapons used to be hung, which was called Dhat Anwat and which used to be worshipped. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he turned away from it to another shade that was near it; this was on a hot day. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Appoint a Dhat Anwat for us as they have a Dhat Anwat." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to that man: "These are the (old) ways! By the One in whose hand is my soul, you have said what the Children of Israel said to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him): 'Make for us a god as they have gods.' He said: 'Shall I seek for you a god other than Allah, when He has favoured you over all the worlds?'"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Kathir bin Abdullah, whom the majority have declared da'if (weak), while Imam al-Tirmidhi graded his hadith hasan (good).
