Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A beggar came and stood by Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was offering a voluntary prayer and was in the state of bowing (ruku'). He took off his ring and gave it to the beggar. That man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it, and this verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, your ally is Allah Almighty, and His Messenger, and those who believe, those who establish prayer and give zakah while they are bowing." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever I am the beloved (mawla) of, Ali is also his beloved. O Allah! Love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
