Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: Huyayy bin Akhtab and Ka'b bin al-Ashraf came to Quraysh in Makkah and made a pact of alliance with them to fight against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people of Makkah said to them: "You possess ancient knowledge and you also have the earlier Book, so tell us about ourselves and about Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." They asked: "What are you, and what is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?" The people of Makkah said: "We slaughter she-camels with high humps, we give people milk mixed with water to drink, we free captives, we give water to the pilgrims, and we maintain ties of kinship." They asked: "What does Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) do?" Quraysh of Makkah said: "He has no offspring left; he has violated the rights of kinship, and the thieves of the pilgrims, Banu Ghifar, have followed him." So Huyayy bin Akhtab and Ka'b bin al-Ashraf said: "You are better than Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon a more rightly guided path." So Allah Almighty revealed this verse about it: "Have you not seen those who were given a share of the Book, that they believe in idols and Taghut (that is, Satan)?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Yunus bin Sulayman al-Jammal, whom I do not know, and the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
