Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10925

Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Indeed, Allah Almighty does not love whoever is arrogant and boastful (self-conceited)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned arrogance and described how grave it is, and Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What are you weeping about?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I love beauty, to the extent that I even like the strap of my sandal to be fine." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are among the people of Paradise. Arrogance is not that your mount or your saddle be fine; rather, arrogance belongs to the one who turns away from the truth and looks down on people."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Abi Layla, who has a poor memory, and his father Abdul Rahman did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him).
