Abu al-Walid al-Qurashi says: I was with Bilal bin Abi Burdah when a man from the tribe of Abd al-Qays came to him and said: "May Allah keep the emir upright! The people of al-Taff do not pay the zakah on their wealth." He said: "Then what happened?" He said: "I came to know of it, so I informed the emir." He said: "Where are you from?" He said: "From the tribe of Abd al-Qays." He asked: "What is your name?" He said: "So-and-so, son of so-and-so." So Bilal bin Abi Burdah wrote to the chief of his police and said: "Send someone to the tribe of Abd al-Qays and ask them about so-and-so, son of so-and-so: how is his lineage regarded among them?" The messenger returned and said: "I found that his lineage is spoken against." So he said: "Allahu Akbar! My father narrated this hadith to me from my grandfather, Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'No one will seek out (the hidden faults) of people except one born of fornication, or one in whom there is some trace of it.'" The narrator Abu al-Walid reported the word "la yas'a" (meaning: will strive) in place of "la yabghi".
Al-Tabarani recorded it. I do not know the narrator Abu al-Walid al-Qurashi, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
