Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Is it part of tribal partisanship ('asabiyyah) that a man loves his people?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No. Rather, tribal partisanship is that a man helps his people in wrongdoing." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Abu Dawud and others recorded it, but without these words: "Is it part of tribal partisanship that a man loves his people? He said: No."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains Abbad bin Kathir al-Shami, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared him da'if (weak).
