Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: An army of the Muslims set out, and I was their commander, until we camped at Alexandria. Its ruler said: "Send out to me one man from among you, so that I may talk with him and he may talk with me." Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: "No one but me will go out to him." So I went out with an interpreter, and he too had an interpreter with him. Two pulpits were set up. He asked: "Who are you people?" We said: "We are the Arabs. We are people who live among thorns and leaves (qaraz). We are the people of the House of Allah. We lived the most constricted lives and the hardest lives; we used to eat carrion and attack one another, and our condition was bad, the worst condition in which people have ever lived, until a man appeared among us who at that time was neither the most prominent among us nor the wealthiest. He said: 'I am the Messenger of Allah.' He commanded us to do things we did not know, and forbade us from what we and our forefathers had been upon. So we opposed him, called him a liar, and rejected his words, until another people came out to him and said: 'We affirm your truth, believe in you, follow you, and will fight whoever fights you.' So that Messenger went out to them, and we went out to him and fought him, and he killed us and gained the upper hand over us. Then he turned to the Arabs and fought them until he prevailed over them. If those behind me knew what kind of life you are living, every one of them would come to you to share with you in the comforts you are enjoying." The ruler of Alexandria laughed and said: "Your Messenger spoke the truth. Messengers also came to us with the like of what your Messenger brought to you, and we remained upon it until kings rose to power among us; they began to follow their own desires and abandoned the command of the Prophets. If you hold fast to the command of your Prophet, you will overcome whoever fights you, and you will prevail over whoever pursues you. But when you do as we did, you will abandon the command of the Prophets and act like those who followed their own desires, and then you too will be defeated, for you are neither more numerous than us nor stronger than us." Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I have never spoken with a man more intelligent than him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqamah, who is hasan al-hadith (good in hadith). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
