Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10354

Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent an expedition to the outskirts of Mudar. They mentioned that they had camped in a desert land. In the morning, there was a man there in a tent, with goats in its courtyard. They came to him and stood by him and said: "Give us a goat to slaughter." He gave them a goat to slaughter. They cooked some of it, then another, but they were displeased with it. He said: "There is no goat left among my goats fit for meat, except a pregnant goat or a male goat." So they pounced and took a goat from him. When midday came and they were scorched by the heat, it being a summer day and they had nothing to give them shade, they said: "This man's goats are in the shade." Then they said: "We have more right to the shade than these goats." So they came and said: "Take your goats out of here so that we can sit in the shade." The man said: "When you take them out, they will perish and miscarry their young, while I believe in Allah and His Messenger; I have prayed and I have paid zakah." They took his goats out, and only a short part of the day had passed when the goats began to bleed and miscarried their young. The man hurried until he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what had happened. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became intensely angry, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay seated until those people return." When they returned, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought them and the man together, and they, one after another, said that he was lying, and the anger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) subsided. When the Bedouin saw this, he said: "By Allah, Allah Almighty knows that I have spoken the truth and that these people are lying. O Prophet of Allah, perhaps Allah Almighty will inform you about it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to feel that this man was truthful. He began to call them one by one and adjured each one of them; whenever he adjured a man by Allah and asked him, he said the same thing the Bedouin had said. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: "What made you follow one another in lying, as moths follow one another into the fire? Lying is recorded against a person, except in three cases: when a man tells his wife something untrue so that she will be pleased with him, or a man says something untrue to deceive in war, or a man says something untrue to make peace between two Muslims." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: al-Tirmidhi recorded the last part of this narration.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Shahr bin Hawshab, who has been declared thiqah (trustworthy), and there is weakness in him. The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
