Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10352

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The horsemen of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are) the envoys of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came while I was at Aqrab at that time. Those people seized my paternal aunt and some other people. When they brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and those people described the situation before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), my paternal aunt said: "O Messenger of Allah, the one who would come on my behalf is far away, and the father is cut off, and I am an old woman; I have no servant. Do me a favour, and Allah Almighty will do you a favour." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who is the one who would come on your behalf?" She replied: "Adi bin Hatim." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "The one who has fled from Allah and His Messenger?" The woman said: "Do me a favour." The narrator says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back, there was a man beside him, who the woman thought was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) advised the woman: "Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for something to ride on as well." The woman asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave instructions for her to be given a mount. Sayyiduna Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then that woman came to me and said: "You have done a deed that your father would not have done." Then that woman said: "Go to him, whether out of desire or out of fear, for so-and-so came to him and received such-and-such from him, and so-and-so came to him and received such-and-such." The narrator says: So I too presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). With the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there was a woman and two children, or perhaps one child. Then the narrator mentioned their closeness to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: So I realised that he was not like the kings of Kisra or Caesar. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Adi bin Hatim, why are you running away from saying La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah)? Is there any other god besides Allah Almighty? Why are you running away from saying that Allah Almighty is the Greatest? Is there anything greater than Allah Almighty?" The narrator says: So I accepted Islam, and I saw that his face became joyful because of it. He said: "Those upon whom wrath has fallen are the Jews, and those who have gone astray are the Christians." Then the people asked him for something, so he praised and glorified Allah Almighty and then said: "Amma ba'd (to proceed): O people, it is fitting for you to give something out of your surplus: let one person give a sa', let one give part of a sa', let one give a handful, let one give part of a handful." Shu'bah says: According to my knowledge, these words are also in the report: "Let one give a date, or half a date. Every one of you is to appear before Allah Almighty, and then He will say what I am telling you: 'Did I not make you hearing and seeing? Did I not give you wealth and children? So what have you sent ahead?' Then that person will look in front of him, behind him, to his right and to his left, and he will not find anything with which he could save himself from Hell. So try to protect yourselves from Hell, even if it is with half a date, and if even that is not found, then do so with a gentle word. For I do not fear that you will suffer poverty. Allah Almighty will certainly help you (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are) Allah Almighty will certainly give to you (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are) Allah Almighty will certainly grant you such victory that a woman will travel between al-Hirah and Yathrib, or travel even further than that, and she will have no fear of theft." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this report is mentioned in the Sahih and other books.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Abbad bin Hubaysh, and he is thiqah (trustworthy). Before this, a hadith from Sayyiduna Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed which is clearer than this report; it is about showing favour to a captive, and it has passed in the Book of Jihad.
