Al-Zuhri narrates: On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "Bring me the key of the Ka'bah." He was delayed in coming. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing, waiting for him, until drops of sweat like pearls ran down from him. He said: "Why is he not coming?" A man ran to him and found that the woman who had the key would not give it to him; the narrator stated that the woman was the mother of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). She was saying: "If he takes this key from you, he will never give it back to you." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) kept telling the woman to give the key, until she gave it to him. He brought the key to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) opened the door, then went inside the Ka'bah, then came out with some people accompanying him, and sat down by the Siqayah (the post of providing water to pilgrims). Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have been granted prophethood, we have been given the office of the Siqayah, and we have been given the office of the Hijabah (custodianship of the Ka'bah); then no people would have a greater share than us." It was as if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked his statement. He called Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) and, handing the key to him, said: "Keep it safe." Imam Abd al-Razzaq said: I narrated this hadith to Ibn Uyaynah, and he said: Ibn Jurayj told me that Ibn Abi Mulaykah said: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the key, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at that time: "I give you that in which you bear hardship; I do not give you that from which you receive gifts." The narrator says: what is meant by the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is: I have given you the Siqayah because you bear hardship in it; I have not given you the key of the House of Allah, because people receive gifts through it. This explanation is that of Imam Abd al-Razzaq.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a mursal report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
