Ibn Shihab narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the command for the Umrah of al-Qada', he ordered his Companions: "Uncover your shoulders, and walk briskly in the circumambulation (tawaf)." The aim of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was to show the polytheists their strength and power, and to outmanoeuvre them as far as he could. So the men, women and children of the people of Makkah gathered and began to watch the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions while they were circumambulating the House. At that time Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him), with his sword hung from his shoulder, was reciting this rajaz in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O sons of the disbelievers! Clear his (that is, the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him)) way. I bear witness that he is His (that is, Allah Almighty's) Messenger. The Most Merciful has revealed this in His revealed word, which (the word of the Most Merciful) is in scriptures recited to His Messenger. So today we will strike you on the basis of its (the Qur'an's) interpretation, just as before we struck you on the basis of its revelation: a blow that will sever the head from the body and make a friend heedless of his friend." Some of the nobles of the polytheists were not present there; out of their anger, envy and conceit they disliked seeing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they went off to the outskirts of Makkah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed his rites and stayed there for three days.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
