Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent his maternal uncle Sayyiduna Haram (may Allah be pleased with him), the brother of Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), along with seventy men, who were later martyred at Bi'r Ma'unah, the chief of the polytheists in those days was Amir bin al-Tufayl. He had come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Settle on one of three things for me: the people of the settled lands will be with you and the people of the desert will remain with me; or else I will become caliph after you; otherwise I will wage war on you with the Ghatafan tribe, with two thousand animals (along with men)." The narrator says: He was struck by illness in the house of a woman from such-and-such a clan. He said: "This is a gland like the gland of a camel, in the house of a woman from such-and-such a tribe. Bring me my horse!" It was brought to him, he mounted it, and then he died while on its back. Sayyiduna Haram (may Allah be pleased with him), the brother of Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), went, and two men were with him: one was from Banu Umayyah, and the other was a lame man. He said to them: "Stay near me until I come to you. If these people grant me safety, well and good; otherwise you will be near me. If they kill me, then inform your companions about it." Then Sayyiduna Haram (may Allah be pleased with him) went to those people and said: "Do you grant me safety so that I may convey to you the message of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to you?" They said: "Very well!" Then he began talking with them. They signalled to a man from among themselves; he came from behind him and struck him with a spear until the spear passed right through him. He said: "Allahu Akbar! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, I have succeeded!" The narrator says: Then those people killed all of them, except the lame man, whom they did not kill because he was on the top of a mountain. After this the narrator mentioned the complete hadith.
