Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Amir bin al-Tufayl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah. While speaking with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) he argued back, and his voice became raised. Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), holding his sword. He said: "O Amir! Keep your voice lowered before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!" He said: "What business is that of yours?" Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One who has honoured him! Were it not that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would dislike it, I would have struck off your head with this sword." Amir, who was sitting, looked at him while Thabit was standing, and said: "By Allah, O Thabit! If you were to present yourself to me, you would certainly turn away from me." Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, O Amir! If you were to present yourself to my tongue, you would come to dislike my life." Meanwhile, a nephew of Amir bin al-Tufayl sneezed and praised Allah Almighty, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded to his sneeze. Then Amir bin al-Tufayl sneezed but did not praise Allah Almighty, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not respond to him. Amir said: "You responded to this boy and not to me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He praised Allah Almighty." He said: "Then by the One by whom one swears, I will gather horsemen and foot soldiers against you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty will suffice me against you, and the two sons of Qaylah will suffice." Then Amir left and began gathering people against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and people from three branches of Banu Sulaym joined him. These were the people whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had been supplicating against in the Fajr prayer; he would say: "O Allah! Curse Lihyan, Ri'l and Dhakwan! And Usayyah has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger. Allah is the Greatest." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept making this supplication for seventeen days. When he heard that Amir had gathered people against him, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent ten men, among whom was Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah be pleased with him); the rest of them were from the Ansar, and their commander was Sayyiduna al-Mundhir bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). They set out until they camped by Bi'r Ma'unah. Then he (the enemy) advanced, attacked them and killed them all. Of all of them, only Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) escaped; he was among the mounts. On the very day that the best of his Companions were martyred, Allah Almighty sent revelation to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your companions have been killed behind you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against Amir bin al-Tufayl; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Suffice me against Amir!" So Allah Almighty sufficed him against him. That man came and alighted in his courtyard, and Allah Almighty afflicted him with the disease called dhabhah (an abscess) in his throat. He was in the house of a woman from Salul. He began leaping about, and he was saying: "O family of Amir! A gland like the gland of a camel, in the house of a woman of Salul!" He was averse to dying in that woman's house, but he remained there continuously until he died in that woman's house. A man named Arbad bin Qays was struck by a thunderbolt; he was burned and died. So all the people who were with them went back.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Muhaymin bin Abbas, who is da'if (weak).
