Statement of the Virtues of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all] good things, and it is those who are the successful. Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.”
❀ And Allah Almighty has said:
“And [also for] those who came after them, saying, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.'”
❀ And Allah Almighty has said:
“So if they believe in the same as you believe in, then they have been [rightly] guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension, and Allah will be sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.”
❀ And Allah Almighty has said:
“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers – so that Allah may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.”
Hadith 1
Hakim has declared it authentic on the condition of the two Sheikhs, and Al-Dhahabi has agreed with their view.
“It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said while delivering a sermon at the place called ‘Jabiyah’: Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us just as I am standing among you, and he (peace be upon him) said: ‘I advise you to treat my companions well, and also those who will come after them, and those who will come after the followers (Tabi’in), (I advise you to treat them well). After that, falsehood will become so widespread that a man will give testimony before being asked for it. So whoever among you wants to enter Paradise should adhere to being with the Muslim community, for Satan stays with every person who is alone, and Satan moves away a little from two people. None of you should be alone with a non-mahram woman, for there are three with them, and the third is Satan. And whoever does good and feels happiness and sins and feels distress is a believer.'”
Hadith 2
The investigator has declared it authentic.
“And Hazrat Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I found written in the Torah that Muhammad (peace be upon him) will be the Messenger of Allah, neither quick-tempered nor harsh-faced, not one who causes commotion in the markets, nor one who repays evil with evil, but rather forgiving and merciful. His Ummah will be very praiseworthy. Everywhere they will praise and glorify Allah. On every high place, they will say Allahu Akbar while ascending. Their hems will be up to their calves, they will perform ablution for their limbs, and they will form ranks in the same manner for prayer and fighting. Their caller (i.e., the Mu’adhdhin) will give the Adhan in the open air. At midnight, the sound of their remembrances will be as soft as the buzzing of honeybees. The birthplace of this Messenger will be Makkah, the place of migration will be Taubah (i.e., Madinah Munawwarah), and the borders of his rule will reach as far as Sham.”
Hadith 3
Shu’aib has declared it “Sahih.”
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه that there was some harsh speech between Sayyiduna Khalid ibn Walid رضي الله عنه and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman ibn Awf رضي الله عنه. Sayyiduna Khalid رضي الله عنه said to Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman رضي الله عنه: You speak ill of us merely because you entered Islam a few days before us. When this was mentioned to the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, he said: Do not say anything bad about my companions for my sake. By the One in Whose hand is my life, even if you spend gold equal to the mountains of Uhud or the Khatif mountains, you will not reach their deeds, that is, their ranks.”
Hadith 4
Ibn Hibban and Sheikh Shu’aib, may Allah have mercy on him, have declared it authentic.
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: We prayed Maghrib prayer in the company of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then we said it would be better to wait and pray Isha prayer in his company before leaving. So we waited. The Prophet, peace be upon him, came towards us and said: Did you stay here? We replied: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! We thought we would also pray Isha prayer in your company. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: You have done well. Then he raised his head towards the sky, as it was his habit to often raise his head towards the sky, then he said: ‘These stars are the trustees (guardians and protectors) of the sky. When these stars disappear, the sky will undergo the condition that has been promised to it, meaning the sky will split into pieces. I am also a trustee for my companions; when I depart from this world, trials and tribulations will come upon my companions as promised to them, and my companions are also trustees and protectors for my Ummah. When my companions depart from this world, the era of those trials will begin for my Ummah, as promised to them.'”
Hadith 5
“And Abdullah bin Basar رضي الله عنه, a companion of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, says: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Blessed is the one who saw me (i.e., a companion) and believed in me, and blessed is the one who saw the person who saw me (i.e., a follower) and believed, and blessed is the one who saw the one who saw the companions (i.e., the follower of the followers) and believed.”
Hadith 6
“And Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Do not insult my companions, for their status is such that if any one of you were to spend gold equal to Mount Uhud, it would not reach even half a mudd of the reward of these noble companions رضي الله عنهم.”
Hadith 7
Sheikh Shoaib has declared it “Sahih”.
“And it is narrated from Sayyidna Tariq bin Ashim, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: The martyrdom of my companions is sufficient.”
Hadith 8
“And Hazrat Wathilah bin Ustaqa, may Allah be pleased with him, says, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: Whoever saw me and was in my company (i.e., a companion), as long as that person remains among you, you will always be upon good. By Allah! Whoever saw my companion and was in his company (i.e., a follower) as long as he remains among you, you people will always be upon good. By Allah! Whoever saw a follower (i.e., a follower of the follower) and was in his company, as long as he remains among you, you people will always be upon good.”
Hadith 9
Shu’aib has called it Hasan.
“And Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Allah Almighty looked into the hearts of His servants and found the heart of Muhammad, peace be upon him, better than all the hearts of mankind, so He chose Muhammad, peace be upon him, for Himself and sent him with prophethood. Then after selecting this heart, He looked into the hearts of the rest of the servants and found the hearts of the companions of Muhammad, peace be upon him, better than all the hearts of mankind, so He made them the ministers (and companions) of His Prophet, who fight for His religion. Therefore, whatever the Muslims consider good is also good in the sight of Allah, and whatever the Muslims consider bad is also bad in the sight of Allah.”
Hadith 10
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: A time will come upon the people when their armies will fight in jihad and they will be asked, ‘Is there anyone among you who has seen the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ By his blessing, they will be victorious. Then a time will come when many groups will fight in jihad and they will be asked, ‘Is there anyone among you who has seen a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ Thus, by his blessing, the Muslims will be granted victory. Then a time will come when groups will fight in jihad and they will be asked, ‘Is there anyone among you who has seen a Tabi’i (follower of the Companions)?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ Thus, by his blessing, they will achieve victory.”
The Prayer of Mercy by Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) for Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 11
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the physical body of Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was placed on the bier, before the funeral was carried, people surrounded him from all sides, offering prayers, praising, and supplicating for mercy. I was also among them when suddenly someone startled me by placing his hand on my shoulder from behind. I turned and saw Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) coming. He prayed for mercy for Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: ‘You have not left behind any person who is more beloved to me than you in this matter, that I may meet Allah with deeds like yours. By Allah! I have always believed that Allah will keep you with His two companions. The reason is that I often heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: I, Abu Bakr, and Umar came. I, Abu Bakr, and Umar entered. I, Abu Bakr, and Umar went out. I hoped, indeed I always believed, that Allah would keep you with these two.'”
The Religion of Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab
Hadith 12
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: I was asleep; I saw people being brought before me. They were wearing shirts; some shirts reached up to the chest, some below that, and when Umar ibn Khattab passed by, the shirt he was wearing was dragging on the ground. People asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the interpretation of this?
The Knowledge of Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab
Hadith 13
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar bin Khattab that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: I was asleep and saw a bowl brought to me. It contained milk. I drank from it until I felt that the moisture was coming out from under my nails. Then I gave the remaining milk to Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. (Those present) said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the interpretation of this? He said: Knowledge.”
Hadith 14
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: I was asleep and was shown in a dream that I was drawing water from my pond and giving it to the people to drink. Then Abu Bakr came and took the bucket from my hand to ease me. He drew two buckets of water, but there was some weakness in his drawing of water. May Allah forgive him! Then Ibn Khattab came and took the bucket from him. I have never seen anyone pull the bucket with more strength than him, until the people were satisfied and the pond was completely full, with water overflowing from it.”
The Palace of Sayyidna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) in Paradise
Hadith 15
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I entered Paradise and saw there a house or palace. I asked: Whose is this? The angels said: This is the (palace) of Umar ibn Khattab. I intended to enter it, then I remembered your zeal. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep and said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there zeal shown even towards you!”
When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is seen, Satan changes his path
Hadith 16
“And Hazrat Saad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to attend the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). At that time, some women from Quraysh were sitting with him, talking to him, speaking a lot, and their voices were also loud. When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission, they stood up quickly and went behind the curtain. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) granted him permission and was smiling at that time. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! May Allah keep your blessed teeth smiling! Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: I am amazed at those women who were sitting with me. When they heard your voice, they immediately went behind the curtain. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! They have more right to fear you. Then Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Enemies of your own life! You fear me but do not fear the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? Those women said: Yes, you are harsh and stern in comparison to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: By the One in Whose hand is my soul! Whenever Satan meets you walking on a path, he leaves your path and takes another way.”
The Distinctive Quality of Sayyiduna Umar Among Previous Nations
Hadith 17
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Aisha رضي الله عنها that the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: There were people among previous nations with whom conversation was held; if any of them were in my Ummah, it is Umar ibn Khattab among them.”
Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه’s Conformity with Allah’s Commands
Hadith 18
And it is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه that Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه said: I conformed to my Lord in three matters: in making Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Abraham) the place of prayer, in the curtain (hijab), and in the prisoners of Badr (that they should be killed).”
If There Were a Prophet After Me, It Would Be Umar
Hadith 19
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If any prophet were to come after me, it would have been Umar bin Khattab.”
O Allah! Strengthen Islam through Umar
Hadith 20
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: O Allah! Among Abu Jahl and Umar bin Khattab, whoever is more beloved to You, honor Islam through him. Allah Almighty loved Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) more among them.”
The Virtue of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 21
“And it is narrated from Abu Nufail that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When the righteous are mentioned, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is also worthy of being remembered.”
The Truth about Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was revealed on the tongue
Hadith 22
“And it is narrated from Ghazif bin Harith that he passed by Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, ‘Ghazif! He is a good man.’ Then Ghazif met Sayyiduna Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said to him: ‘My brother! Pray for forgiveness for me.’ Ghazif said: ‘You are a companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him; you are more deserving that you pray for me.’ He said: ‘I heard Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, saying that Ghazif is a good man, while the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said that Allah has established the truth upon the heart and tongue of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him.'”
Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was the first to pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him
Hadith 23
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood, may Allah be pleased with him, that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, excelled people in four matters. He advised killing the prisoners of Badr, then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: ﴿لَوْلَا كِتَابٌ مِنَ اللهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيم﴾ If Allah’s decision had not come, a severe punishment would have befallen you because of what you took from those prisoners as ransom. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Mothers of the Believers should observe hijab. Sayyida Zainab, may Allah be pleased with her, said to him: O son of Khattab! You have imposed yourself upon us, even though revelation descends in our homes. But Allah Almighty revealed this verse in support of Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding hijab: ﴿وَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ مَتاعا فَاسْأَلُوهُنَّ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ﴾ And O you who believe! When you ask anything from the Mothers of the Believers, ask from behind a curtain. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, also excelled others in that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, prayed for him: “O Allah! Grant Islam dominance through Umar.” Moreover, Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was the one who suggested appointing Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, as Caliph and was the first to pledge allegiance to him.”
The Reverence of Sayyiduna Umar
Hadith 24
“It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha رضي الله عنها, she said: I used to enter the house in which the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم and my father were buried. I would even remove my clothes there and say that one is my husband and the other is my father. But by Allah! When Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه was buried, I would enter wrapping myself in clothes out of respect for him.”
Hadith 25
Sheikh Hamza Zain has declared it authentic.
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraidah Aslami رضي الله عنه that once the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم returned from a battle, and a black female slave came before him and said: I had vowed that if Allah brings you back safely, I will play the tambourine for you. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: If you have vowed this, then fulfill it, and if you have not vowed it, then leave it. So she began playing the tambourine. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه arrived, and she continued playing. Some other companions also came, and she kept playing continuously. But later, when Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه came, she turned the tambourine away from him and began to hide herself. The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: Umar! Indeed, even Satan fears you. I am sitting here, and these people have come, this slave girl was engrossed in playing the tambourine, but when you came, she acted like this.”
Statement of Some Fatwas and Decisions of Sayyiduna Umar
Hadith 26
Ahmad Shakir has declared it authentic.
“And it is narrated from Harith bin Muawiyah Al-Kindi, who said: I mounted to inquire about three matters from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. When I reached Madinah Munawwarah, Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, asked me: Why have you come? I explained that I wanted to inquire about three issues. He asked: What are those issues? I said: Sometimes my wife and I are in a cramped room, and the time for prayer arrives. If I pray, she comes in front of me, and if she prays behind me, she has to leave the room. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Hang a cloth between you and her, then she can pray in front of you if she wishes. Then I asked him about performing two rak’ahs after Asr prayer. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade me from those two rak’ahs. Then I said: The third matter is that I want to ask you about giving sermons and speeches. People want me to preach in front of them. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Do whatever you want. It seemed that Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, disliked preventing him from this. The man said: I want to know your opinion. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I fear that if you preach in front of them, you will inwardly begin to consider yourself superior and better than others. You will preach and think of yourself as if you are a shining star, superior and excellent. But the more you consider yourself superior to them, Allah Almighty will place you beneath their feet on the Day of Judgment.”
Hadith 27
Ahmad Shakir has declared it authentic.
“And Bajalah says: I was the scribe of Juz’ bin Muawiyah, who was the uncle of Ahnaf bin Qais. We received a letter from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), this was a year before his death, in which it was written that every sorcerer and sorceress should be killed, and among the Magians, a distinction should be made between every Mahram (non-marriageable kin), and they should be prevented from reciting Zamzamah. After this order, we killed three sorcerers and, according to the Book of Allah, created separation among forbidden relationships. Juz’ prepared a lot of food and invited the Magians, placing his sword on his thigh. They ate the food without Zamzamah and paid silver as jizya equivalent to the burden of one or two mules, but Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did not accept this jizya from them. Sometimes Sufyan narrates like this: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was not in favor of taking jizya from the Magians, until Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) testified that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took jizya from the Magians of the Hijr region, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began accepting jizya from the Magians.”
Hadith 28
Ahmad Shakir has declared it authentic.
“And it is narrated from Iyad Al-Ash’ari, who said: I was part of the Battle of Yarmouk, five leaders were appointed over us: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, Sayyiduna Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan, Sayyiduna Ibn Husnah, Sayyiduna Khalid ibn Walid, and Sayyiduna Iyad, may Allah be pleased with them. Here, the Iyad referred to is not the same Iyad from whom Samak narrates hadith, but another person. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, had instructed that when the battle begins, Abu Ubaidah, may Allah be pleased with him, would be your commander. We wrote to Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that death was ready to engulf us, then we requested further assistance from him. He replied, ‘I have received your letter; you have asked me for more help. I guide you towards great strength and numbers. Seek help from Allah Almighty. On the day of Badr, your numbers were very few compared to the enemy, yet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was victorious. When this letter reaches you, start fighting the enemy and do not ask me for help.’ Iyad says: When we fought the enemy, we defeated them and killed them up to twelve miles, and we obtained a great amount of spoils. When the people consulted among themselves, Iyad advised us to give ten from each head. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: ‘Who among you will race me on horseback?’ A young man said: ‘If you are not displeased, I am ready.’ So he came forward. I saw both of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah’s legs waving in the air; that young man was behind him riding an Arabian horse, meaning that young man lagged behind Abu Ubaidah in the race.”
Hadith 29
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, addressed the people at the place of Jabiyah and said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood among us just as I stand among you, and he, peace be upon him, said: I advise you to treat my companions well, and then those who come after them, and then those who come after them as well. After those times, falsehood will become widespread, to the extent that a person will begin to give testimony before being asked for it. So whoever among you wishes to have a place in the middle of Paradise, let him remain with the group, for Satan is with the lone person, and if two people are together, he stays farther away from them. And none of you should be alone with a woman, for there will be a third, Satan, among them. Also, when a person finds good deeds pleasing and evil deeds detestable, then he will be a believer.”
Hadith 30
Ahmad Shakir has called it “authentic chain of narration.”
“And it is narrated from Ma‘bad bin Abi Talhah Yamari, who said: Our master Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, stood on the pulpit on Friday and praised and glorified Allah. After that, he mentioned the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and our master Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and then said: I saw a dream, and I think its interpretation is that my time of death is near. I saw that a red rooster pecked me twice. When I narrated this dream before Sayyida Asma bint Umais, the wife of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, she said that some man will kill our master Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. Then our master Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: People tell me to appoint someone as my caliph. Remember that Allah will not let the religion and caliphate with which He sent His Prophet be lost. If my death comes soon, then this is a council of six persons. When the Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him, passed away, he was pleased with all of them. Whomever you pledge allegiance to among them, listen to him and obey him. I know well that some people will criticize this matter. I have fought those people with my own hands over Islam. Such people are enemies of Allah, disbelievers, and misguided. By Allah! My Lord has commanded me and made me a caliph; I am not leaving behind anything more important than this matter of caliphate. By Allah! Since I came into the company of the Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him, he spoke about the matter of caliphate with such severity as he did not speak about any other matter. To the extent that he, peace be upon him, struck his blessed finger on my chest and said: The last verse of Surah An-Nisa, which was revealed in the summer, is sufficient for you regarding this matter. If I live, I will make a decision on this issue that both the literate and illiterate will understand well. I bear witness before Allah regarding the agents and representatives I sent to various regions that I sent them to teach people the religion and to teach them the Sunnah of the Prophet, and whatever matter is not clear to them, they should bring it to me. People! You eat two plants, namely garlic and onion, which I find extremely disliked. By Allah! I used to see the Noble Prophet, peace be upon him, when he smelled the odor of these from a person, he would order and that person would be taken out of the mosque and brought to the Baqi cemetery. Whoever must eat these plants, let him cook them. Ma‘bad says that our master Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, gave this address to the people on Friday, and on Wednesday, an assassination attempt was made on the Prophet, peace be upon him.”
Impressions of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 31
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was placed between the pulpit and the grave of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came and stood at the front of the rows and said three times: May Allah have mercy on you. After the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there is no person among Allah’s creation whom I would prefer to go to Allah with such a record of deeds as this veiled man.”
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was devoted to the Hadiths of the Messenger (peace be upon him)
Hadith 32
Muhaddith Albani has graded it Hasan.
“And Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) became the Caliph, he addressed the people. In it, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) permitted Mut’ah for us for three days and then forbade it. By Allah! If I receive information about a person who practiced Mut’ah and he is married, I will stone him to death, except in the case that he brings four witnesses who testify that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) declared it permissible after announcing its prohibition.”
Hadith 33
“And Sayyid Nasib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I was standing in the Prophet’s Mosque when someone threw a pebble towards me. When I looked up, I saw Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Bring those two persons in front of me. When I brought them to him, he asked: Which tribe do you belong to? Or he asked where you live? They said that we are residents of Taif. He said: If you were from Medina, I would not have let you go without punishing you. Do you raise your voices in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?”
Hadith 34
“And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) said that we were with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and he was holding the hand of Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! You are dearer to me than everything except my own self. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: No, by the One in Whose hand is my soul! (Faith cannot be complete) until I am dearer to you than your own self. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! Then you are indeed dearer to me than my own self. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Yes, Umar! Now (your faith is complete).”
Hadith 35
“And Sayyidna Aamir bin Wathilah رضي الله عنه narrates: Once Nafi’ bin Abdul Harith met Sayyidna Umar رضي الله عنه in the region of Asfan, while Sayyidna Umar رضي الله عنه had appointed him as the governor of Makkah. Sayyidna Umar bin Khattab رضي الله عنه asked: (You are in Asfan, and in your absence) whom have you appointed as the governor over the people of Makkah? Nafi’ bin Abdul Harith replied: Ibn Abza’i. Sayyidna Umar رضي الله عنه asked: Who is Ibn Abza’i? He said: He is one of our freed slaves. Sayyidna Umar رضي الله عنه said: You have appointed a slave as their governor? Nafi’ said: He is the best reciter of the Qur’an and a great scholar of the obligations. Umar رضي الله عنه said: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Indeed, Allah grants honor and dignity to nations because of this Book (the Qur’an), and due to neglecting this Book, He humiliates some.”
The Desire of Hazrat Umar (RA) for Martyrdom
Hadith 36
“And Hazrat Aslam narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (RA) prayed: O Allah! Grant me martyrdom in Your path and let me die in the city of Your Messenger (SAW).”
Hazrat Umar (RA) Eating with Slaves
Hadith 37
“And Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I was sitting with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came carrying a large bowl, which several men were carrying wrapped in a sheet. They placed this bowl before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called the poor and the slaves around him. They ate together with him (Sayyiduna Umar). Then he said: May Allah curse those who avoid eating with their slaves. Sayyiduna Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! We do not avoid them, but we prefer ourselves over them. By Allah! We do not get such good food that we can eat ourselves and also feed them.”
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) judges with truthfulness
Hadith 38
Sheikh Saleem Al-Hilali has called it “Mawquf Sahih.”
“Imam Saeed bin Musayyib narrates that a Muslim and a Jew brought a dispute before Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that the Jew was right in this matter. Therefore, he ruled in his favor. The Jew said: By Allah! You have judged rightly. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him and said: How do you know this? The Jew said: We find in our books that when a judge makes a rightful judgment, the two angels on his right and left keep him on the right path and grant him the ability to judge rightly as long as he remains on the right path, and when he abandons the truth, they leave him and ascend.”
The Asceticism and Piety of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 39
“And Abu Burda bin Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Do you know what my father (Umar, may Allah be pleased with him) said to your father (Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him)? I said: I do not know. He said: My father said to your father: O Abu Musa! Would it please you that our Islam with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), our migration with you, our jihad with you—in short, all our deeds with you—be a source of comfort for us, and that the deeds we performed after you be disregarded in terms of equality, neither earning us reward nor accountability? Upon this, your father said to my father: By Allah! I am not pleased with that, because after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) we continued to perform jihad, pray, fast, and carry out many good deeds. A person accepted Islam through our hands, so we hope for the reward of that as well. My father Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: But as far as I am concerned, by the One in whose hand is my soul! I desire that only those deeds which I performed during the life of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remain preserved, and that all the deeds we performed after you be treated equally with us, so that we may be saved, neither rewarded nor punished. Abu Burda said: I said: By Allah! Your father was better than my father in any case.”
The Sunnah of Hazrat Umar (RA) Following Hazrat Umar (RA)
Hadith 40
Muhaddith Albani has declared it authentic.
“It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: After me, follow Abu Bakr and Umar.”
