“And Hazrat Malik bin Sa’sa’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Once, I was in a state between sleep and wakefulness near the Kaaba. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned a third man taken between two men. After that, a golden basin full of wisdom and faith was brought to me. My chest was split open down to the last part of my stomach. Then my stomach was washed with Zamzam water and filled with wisdom and faith. After that, a mount was brought to me. White, smaller than a mule and larger than a donkey, that is, Al-Buraq. I mounted it and went with Jibreel (Gabriel). When we reached the sky of the world, a question was asked: Who are these gentlemen? He said: Jibreel. It was asked: Who else came with you? He said: Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was asked: Were you sent to call them? He said: Yes. Then the answer came: How blessed are those who come to a spacious place! Then I came before Adam (peace be upon him) and greeted him. He said, Come, dear son and good Prophet. Then we reached the second heaven, where the same question was asked. Who are these gentlemen? He said: Jibreel. It was asked, Did anyone else come with you? He said: Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was asked, Were you sent to call them? He said: Yes. The answer came from there: How blessed are those who come to a spacious place! After that, I met Jesus and John (peace be upon them), who also welcomed their brother and Prophet. Then we came to the third heaven, where the same question was asked: Who are these gentlemen? The answer was Jibreel. It was asked, Is there anyone else with you? He said: Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was asked, Were you sent to call them? He said: Yes. Then a voice said: How blessed are those who come to a spacious place, how righteous are those who come! Here I met Joseph (peace be upon him) and greeted him. He said, How blessed are my brother and Prophet who have come to a spacious place. From here we came to the fourth heaven, where the same question was asked: Who are these gentlemen? The answer was Jibreel. It was asked, Who else is with you? He said: Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was asked, Were you sent to bring them? He said: Yes. Then the voice said: How blessed are those who come to a spacious place, how good are those who come! Here I met Enoch (Idris) (peace be upon him) and greeted him. He said, Welcome, brother and Prophet. From here we came to the fifth heaven. Here too the question was asked: Who are these gentlemen? The answer was Jibreel. It was asked, Who else came with you? He said: Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was asked, Were you sent to call them? He said: Yes. The voice said: How blessed are those who come to a spacious place, how good are those who come. Here we met Aaron (Harun) (peace be upon him) and I greeted him. He said, Blessed, my brother and Prophet, you have come to a spacious place! From here we came to the sixth heaven, where the same question was asked: Who are these gentlemen? The answer was Jibreel. It was asked, Is there anyone else with you? He said: Yes, Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was asked, Were they called? He said: Yes. It was said, How blessed are those who come to a spacious place, how good are those who come. Here I met Moses (Musa) (peace be upon him) and greeted him. He said, My brother and Prophet, you have come to a spacious place! When I was about to move on from there, he began to weep. Someone asked, Honorable one! Why are you crying? He said, O Allah! This young man, to whom prophethood was given after me, the number of those entering Paradise from his nation will be more than those entering Paradise from my nation. After that, we came to the seventh heaven, where the same question was asked: Who are these gentlemen? The answer was Jibreel. It was asked, Is there anyone else with you? He said: Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was asked, Were you sent to call them? Welcome, good ones who come. Here I met Abraham (Ibrahim) (peace be upon him) and greeted him. He said, My son and Prophet, blessed, you have come to a spacious place! After that, I was shown Bayt al-Ma’mur. I asked Jibreel about it, and he explained that this is Bayt al-Ma’mur. Seventy thousand angels pray there daily, and once an angel leaves after praying, he never enters again. I was also shown Sidrat al-Muntaha, its fruits were like the pots of Maqam al-Hijr, and its leaves were like elephant ears. Four rivers flowed from its root, two internal and two external. I asked Jibreel, and he said that the two internal rivers are in Paradise, and the two external rivers in the world are the Nile and the Euphrates. After that, fifty daily prayers were made obligatory upon me. When I returned and met Moses (peace be upon him), he asked what I had done. I said that fifty prayers were made obligatory upon me. He said, I know humans better than you; I have had great experience with the Children of Israel. Your nation does not have the strength for so many prayers, so return to your Lord and ask for some reduction. I returned, and Allah reduced the prayers to forty. Still, Moses insisted on reduction. This time it was reduced to thirty. Then he said the same, so it was reduced to twenty. Then Moses said the same, and upon my request to the Lord of Glory, Allah reduced it to ten. When I came to Moses, he still insisted on reduction, and this time Allah reduced it to five. Then I met Moses again, and he asked what happened. I said Allah had reduced it to five. He again insisted on reduction. I said now I have entrusted it to Allah. Then a voice came: I have established your duty (five prayers). I have eased it for My servants, and I give ten times the reward for one good deed.”

The Leper, Blind, and Bald Meeting with the Angel in Human Form

Hadith 9:

“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) say: There were three persons among the Children of Israel: one was leprous, the second was blind, and the third was bald. Allah Almighty wished to test them. So Allah sent an angel to them. The angel first came to the leper and asked him what he liked the most. He replied, ‘Good color and good skin, because people avoid me.’ It is narrated that the angel laid his hand on him, and his disease was removed, his color became beautiful, and his skin became good. The angel asked, ‘What kind of wealth would you prefer?’ He said, ‘A camel!’ or he said, ‘A cow.’ Ishaq bin Abdullah had a doubt in this regard that one of the leper and the bald man desired a camel, and the other desired a cow. So he was given a pregnant she-camel and was told that Allah would bless it for him. Then the angel came to the bald man and asked him what he liked. He said, ‘Fine hair and that my present defect be removed, because people avoid me because of it.’ It is narrated that the angel laid his hand on his head, and his defect disappeared and was replaced by fine hair. The angel asked, ‘What kind of wealth would you prefer?’ He said, ‘A cow!’ It is narrated that the angel gave him a pregnant cow and said that Allah would bless it for him. Then the angel came to the blind man and said, ‘What do you like?’ He said, ‘May Allah grant me the light of sight so that I may see people.’ It is narrated that the angel laid his hand on him, and Allah restored his sight. Then he asked, ‘What kind of wealth would you prefer?’ He said, ‘Goats!’ The angel gave him a pregnant goat. Then the offspring of the three animals were born, so much so that the leper’s camels filled his valley, the bald man’s cows and bulls filled his valley, and the blind man’s goats filled his valley. Then the angel came again in his original form to the leper and said, ‘I am a very poor and needy man; all my travel provisions are finished, and I hope for help from none but Allah. But I ask you for a camel for the journey by the same Being who gave you good color, good skin, and wealth.’ He said to the angel, ‘I have many rights over me.’ The angel said, ‘I probably know you. Did you not have leprosy because of which people detested you? You were poor and a laborer. Then Allah gave you these things?’ He said, ‘All this wealth has come from my forefathers.’ The angel said, ‘If you are lying, may Allah return you to your first state.’ Then the angel came to the bald man in his original form and made the same request, and he gave the same answer as the leper. The angel said, ‘If you are lying, may Allah return you to your first state.’ Then the angel came to the blind man in his original form and said, ‘I am a poor man; all my travel provisions are finished, and I hope for help from none but Allah. I ask you for a goat by the same Being who restored your sight so that I may fulfill my travel needs.’ The blind man replied, ‘Indeed, I was blind, and Allah by His grace gave me sight. Indeed, I was poor and needy, and Allah made me wealthy. You may take as many goats as you want. By Allah! Since you have invoked Allah’s name, take as much as you wish; I will not stop you at all.’ The angel said, ‘Keep your wealth; this was only a test, and Allah is pleased and happy with you but displeased with your two companions.'”

Angels’ Prayer of Mercy for Those Who Teach Goodness

Zamzam Water and the Angel

Hadith 12:

and the mother of Ismail breastfed Ismail and drank from that water until the water in the skin ran out. She became thirsty, and her son became thirsty, and she watched him writhing or, it is said, staggering. She disliked looking at him, so she found Safa, the nearest mountain on the earth next to her. She climbed it, then faced the valley to see if she could see anyone, but she saw no one. She descended from Safa, and when she reached the valley, she lifted the edge of her garment, then ran with great effort until she crossed the valley. Then she came to Marwah, stood on it, and looked to see if she could see anyone, but saw no one. She did this seven times. Ibn Abbas said: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “That is the running of people between them.” When she reached Marwah, she heard a voice and said, “Hush! She is calling herself.” Then she listened again and heard it again. She said, “I have heard you. If you have any help, then help me.” Then she saw the angel at the place of Zamzam. He dug with his heel or, it is said, with his wing until the water appeared. She made a basin and with her hand made it so that the water would not flow away, and she began to scoop water into her skin bag while it bubbled after each scoop. Ibn Abbas said the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismail. If she had left Zamzam or had not scooped water, Zamzam would have been a flowing spring.” She drank and breastfed her son. The angel said to her: “Do not fear loss, for here is the House of Allah, which this boy and his father will build, and Allah does not waste His people.” The House was elevated from the ground like a hill. Floodwaters would come and take away the land on its right and left. This continued until a group from Jurhum or a household from Jurhum came approaching from the road of Kidaa. They settled in the lower part of Mecca and saw a bird hovering. They said: “This bird is circling water, for we know this valley and there is no water in it.” They sent one or two runners, and they found water and returned to inform them. They came, and the mother of Ismail was at the water. They asked: “Will you allow us to settle near you?” She said: “Yes, but you have no right to the water.” They agreed. Ibn Abbas said the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Now the mother of Ismail had neighbors, and the presence of people gave them comfort.” They settled there and sent for their families, who also came and settled. Thus, many households settled there, and the boy (Ismail, son of Jurhum) grew up and learned Arabic from them. When he grew up, he was so handsome that all eyes were upon him, and he was the most handsome of all. The Jurhum people married him to one of their women. Then the mother of Ismail (Hajar) passed away. After Ismail’s marriage, Ibrahim came to see the family he had left there. Ismail was not home, so he asked his wife about him. She said he had gone seeking livelihood. He asked about their living conditions and situation. She said they were in hardship and difficulty and complained to him. Ibrahim said: “When your husband comes, convey my greetings to him and tell him to change the threshold of his door.” When Ismail returned, he seemed to feel something and asked: “Has anyone come to you?” She said: “Yes, an old man of such and such description came and asked about you. I told him, and he asked about our living conditions. I told him we were in hardship and difficulty.” He asked: “Did he advise you on anything?” She said: “Yes, he told me to convey his greetings to you and to tell you to change the threshold of your door.” Ismail said: “That was my father, and he ordered me to separate from you. You may go to your family.” So Ismail divorced her and married another woman from among them. Ibrahim stayed away from them as Allah willed. Then he came again but did not find him. He entered his wife’s place and asked about him. She said he had gone seeking livelihood. He asked about their living conditions and situation. She said they were well and prosperous and praised Allah. He asked: “What is your food?” She said: “Meat.” He asked: “What is your drink?” She said: “Water.” He prayed: “O Allah, bless their meat and water.” The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “At that time, they had no grain. If they had grain, he would have prayed for its blessing too. Living only on meat and water is not suitable anywhere except Mecca.” Ibrahim said (as he left): “When your husband returns, convey my greetings to him and tell him to keep the threshold of his door.” When Ismail came, he asked: “Has anyone come to you?” She said: “Yes, a handsome old man came and praised you. He asked about you, and I told him. He asked about our living conditions, and I told him we were well.” He asked: “Did he advise you on anything?” She said: “Yes, he conveyed his greetings to you and ordered you to keep the threshold of your door.” Ismail said: “That was my father, and you are the threshold. He ordered me to keep you.” Then Ibrahim stayed with them as Allah willed. Later, Ibrahim came and saw Ismail making arrows under a tree near Zamzam (where Ibrahim had left them). When Ismail saw Ibrahim, he stood up to him, and they behaved with each other as a father and son do with love. Ibrahim said: “O Ismail, Allah has commanded me something.” Ismail said: “Do what your Lord has commanded you.” Ibrahim said: “Will you help me?” Ismail said: “I will help you.” Ibrahim said: “Allah has commanded me to build a house here,” and he pointed to a hill higher than the surroundings. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Then they raised the foundations of the House. Ismail brought stones, and Ibrahim built. When the building rose, Ismail brought a stone and placed it for Ibrahim, who stood on it to build, while Ismail handed him stones, and they said: ﴿رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ﴾

Angels are humble before Allah Almighty

Hadith 25:

«وعن ابي هريرة، يبلغ به النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: إذا قضى الله الامر فى السماء، ضربت الملائكة باجنحتها خضعانا، لقوله: كالسلسلة على صفوان، قال علي: وقال غيره: صفوان ينفذهم ذلك، فإذا ﴿فُزِّعَ عَن قُلُوبِهِمْ قَالُوا مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ﴾ They said: To the one who said ﴿الْحَقَّ ۖ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْكَبِيرُ﴾, eavesdroppers hear it, and the eavesdroppers are like one above the other. Sufyan described with his hand, spreading his fingers of the right hand, placing them one above the other. Perhaps the shooting star reaches the listener before he throws it to his companion and burns him, or perhaps it does not reach him until he throws it to the one below him, and so on until they throw it to the ground. Sufyan perhaps said: until it reaches the ground, then it is thrown on the mouth of the sorcerer, who mixes a hundred lies with it, and some of them become true. They say: Did he not inform us on such and such a day, and such and such happened? So it was found true for the word that was heard from the sky.”

Reference: Sahih Bukhari, Book of Tafsir, No: 4701

“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When Allah Almighty makes a decision in the heavens, the angels humbly strike their wings. As Allah Almighty says: ‘Like the striking of a chain on a smooth stone’ (sound is produced). Ali bin Abdullah al-Madini narrated that except for Sufyan bin Uyaynah and the narrators after Safwan, they said the words ﴿يَنْفُدُهُمْ ذالِكَ﴾ (which cause them fear). Then Allah conveys His command to the angels. When the fear is removed from their hearts, the angels in the next circle ask the angels in the nearer circle what order the Lord has issued. The nearer angels say: Indeed, He has commanded, and it is exalted and great. These words of the angels are overheard by the devils who secretly spread rumors. These rumor-spreading devils stay one above the other (stacked). Sufyan showed with his right hand fingers spread one above the other that this is how the devils stay stacked and go there. Then sometimes it happens that the angels, upon learning this, throw a flame of fire that burns the listener before he can pass the message to the one behind him. Sometimes the flame does not reach him, and he passes the message to the devil below him, who passes it to the one below him, and so on until it reaches the earth (sometimes Sufyan said so). Then the message is placed on the mouth of the astrologer, who mixes a hundred lies with it and tells people. Some of his words turn out to be true, so people say: Look, this astrologer informed us on such and such day that such and such would happen, and it happened just as he said. On the Day of Resurrection, angels will bring Hell under control

Allah Almighty has said: “There are nineteen appointed over it. And We have not made the guardians of the Hellfire except angels; and We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who were given the Scripture will be certain and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease and the disbelievers will say, ‘What does Allah intend by this as an example?’ Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it is not but a reminder to humanity.”

“And Hazrat Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in Bat’ha, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw a cloud passing by a group of his companions and asked what its name was. They said: Sahab (cloud). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Is it also called Mazn? They said yes. He said: ‘Anan also?’ They replied yes. He asked: Do you know the distance between the sky and the earth? The companions said no. He said: It is the distance of seventy-one or seventy-three years’ journey. Then the sky above it is also at the same distance from the first sky, and similarly the seven heavens. On the seventh heaven, there is a sea of the same depth. Above it are eight angels in the form of mountain goats, whose homes are at a distance of their knees. On their backs is the Throne of Allah, whose height is also the same. Above that is Allah, the Blessed and Exalted.”

“And it is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Hazrat Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) received the news of the arrival of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in Medina, he came to him and said that I will ask you about three things that no one except the Prophet knows. What is the first sign of the Day of Judgment? What is the food that will be given first to the people of Paradise? And due to what does a child resemble his father? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) has just come and informed me about it. Upon this, Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that among the angels, they are the enemies of the Jews. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The first sign of the Day of Judgment will appear in the form of a fire that will drive people from the east to the west. The first food that will be presented to the people of Paradise will be the piece of fish liver that hangs. And as far as the resemblance of the child is concerned, when a man approaches a woman, if the man’s semen comes first, then the child resembles him in appearance. If the woman’s semen comes first, then the child resembles the woman in appearance. (Hearing this) Hazrat Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said, I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah. Then he said, O Messenger of Allah! The Jews are an extremely lying nation. If they learn about my acceptance of Islam before you announce it, they will start accusing me of all kinds of falsehoods in front of you. Accordingly, some Jews came, and Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) hid inside the house. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them, Who is Abdullah bin Salam among you? All the Jews said, He is the greatest scholar among us and the son of the greatest scholar. He is the best among us and the son of the best. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said to them: If Abdullah becomes a Muslim, then what will you think? They said, May Allah protect him from that. At that moment, Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) came out and said, I testify that there is no deity except Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the true Messenger of Allah. Now they all started saying about him that he is the worst among us and the son of the worst, and they began to speak ill of him.”

Hadith 34:

Then the angels who stay with you ascend, and Allah Almighty asks, although He knows much more about His servants, ‘In what state did you leave My servants?’ They reply, ‘When we left them, they were performing the Fajr prayer, and when we came to them, they were performing the Asr prayer.'”

Hazrat Jibra’il (Gabriel) Alayhis Salam Casting a Shade Over the Messenger of Allah

Hadith 35:

“And the purified wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), says that she asked the Prophet ﷺ, ‘Has there been any day more difficult for you than the day of Uhud?’ He ﷺ replied, ‘I have endured many hardships from your people (Quraysh), but among all those times, the day of Aqabah was the most difficult for me. It was the occasion when I presented myself to Kanana ibn Abdiyalil ibn Abd Kallal, the chief of Ta’if, but he rejected my invitation (to Islam). I returned from there extremely distressed. Then, when I reached Qarn al-Thalab, I regained some consciousness. I raised my head and saw a cloud shading me, and I saw that Angel Jibril (Gabriel) was within it. He called me and said, “Allah has heard what your people have said about you and what they have rejected. Allah has sent the Angel of the Mountains to you; command him whatever you wish regarding them.” After that, the Angel of the Mountains called me, greeted me, and said, “O Muhammad ﷺ!” Then he said the same thing, “Command me whatever you wish; if you want, I can bring the mountains together on both sides and crush them.” The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “I hope that Allah will raise from their descendants such offspring who will worship Allah alone and associate no partners with Him.”‘ ”

Angel Jibril (AS) Teaching the Companions (RA) the Religion

Hadith 36:

And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: Ask me about the religion. The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, were so awed by him that they could not ask questions. Then a man came and sat near both of the Prophet’s knees, then said: O Messenger of Allah! What is Islam? He replied: You must not associate anyone with Allah, establish prayer, pay zakat, and fast during Ramadan. He said: You have spoken the truth. Then he asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is Iman (faith)? He replied: It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, (the meeting with Him on the Day of Judgment), and His messengers, to believe in resurrection after death, and to believe in the divine decree of all matters. He said: You have spoken correctly. Then he said: O Messenger of Allah! What is Ihsan (excellence)? He replied: You should fear Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then surely He sees you. He said: You have spoken rightly. Then he asked: O Messenger of Allah! When will the Hour (Day of Judgment) be established? He replied: The one who is asked about the Hour does not know more than the questioner. I will tell you its signs: When you see a woman giving birth to her master, then this is among its signs; and when you see barefoot, naked, mute, and deaf people ruling the earth, then this is among its signs; and when you see shepherds of sheep competing in building tall buildings, then this is also among its signs. This (the occurrence of the Hour) is among the five unseen matters that none knows except Allah. Then he recited this verse: “Indeed, with Allah is the knowledge of the Hour; He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die…” until the end of the Surah. Hazrat Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Then the man stood up (and left), so the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: Bring him back to me. They searched but did not find him among the Companions. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: This was Jibreel; he wanted you to learn since you were not asking (he came and asked on your behalf).

“And Hazrat Nuwaas bin Samaan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one morning the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) mentioned the Dajjal and described his matter as both insignificant and great, to the extent that we imagined him among the clusters of dates. So, in the evening, we went to him, and he perceived our impression or thought and said: What is your condition? We said, O Messenger of Allah! You mentioned the Dajjal in the morning and sometimes spoke of him in a low voice and sometimes loudly, sometimes belittling him and sometimes magnifying him (meaning sometimes belittling his trial and sometimes considering his trial great), to the extent that we imagined him among the clusters of dates. He said: I fear something more for you than the Dajjal. If he emerges in your presence, I will confront him first (and overcome him with evidence), and if he emerges in my absence, then every person will confront him on their own, and every Muslim has Allah as a guardian or protector on my behalf. He will be a young man with curly hair, one of his eyes will be blind as if I liken him to ‘Abd al-‘Uzza bin Qatan. Whoever among you finds him should recite the opening verses of Surah Al-Kahf over him. Indeed, he will emerge from the path between Sham (Syria) and Iraq and will spread corruption on the right and left. O servants of Allah! Remain steadfast. We said, O Messenger of Allah! How long will he stay on earth? He said: Forty days; one day will be like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and the rest of the days will be like ordinary days. We said, O Messenger of Allah! Will the prayers of one day suffice for us if it is like a year? He said: No, estimate the time accordingly. We said, O Messenger of Allah! How fast will he travel on earth? He said: Like the rain driven by the wind. Then he will come to a people and invite them; they will believe in him and accept his words. He will command the clouds, and they will rain; the earth will grow by his command. In the evening, their grazing livestock will come back with their tails longer and udders larger and wombs extended. Then he will come to another people and invite them; they will reject his words, so he will leave them, and by morning they will be afflicted by famine, having nothing left of their wealth. When he passes through a barren land, he will say, ‘Bring out your treasures,’ and their treasures will follow him like bees follow their leader. Then he will call a strong young man and strike him with a sword, cutting him into two pieces with a distance between them like the length of a grave. Then he will call him, and he will come laughing with a radiant face. At that time, Allah will send Jesus, the son of Mary (peace be upon him), who will descend near the white minaret in the east of Damascus, dressed in two yellow garments, with the two angels’ wings beneath him, placing his hands on them. When he lowers his head, sweat will drip, and when he raises it, drops like pearls will fall. Whoever inhales the fragrance of Jesus’ breath will not remain alive, and his breath will reach as far as his sight can reach. Jesus will search for the Dajjal until he traps him at the gate of Ludd and kills him. Then a people will come to Jesus whom Allah has saved from the Dajjal (they will not be affected by him). Jesus will place his hands on their faces and show them their ranks in Paradise. At that time, Allah will reveal to Jesus that He has sent out such servants that no one can fight them, so take My servants to the refuge of Mount Tur. Allah will then send Gog and Magog, who will run from every hill. Their first group will pass by the Sea of Tiberias and drink all its water. Then their second group will come, and sometimes there will be water, and sometimes not. The Prophet Jesus and his companions will be besieged (trapped on Mount Tur) until for one of them, the head of an ox will be better than a hundred dinars to any of you. Then the Prophet Jesus and his companions will turn to Allah (pray), and Allah will place worms in their necks, and they will die instantly like one person. Then the Prophet Jesus and his companions will descend from the mountain to the earth, but they will not find a piece of land that is not filled with their fat and stench. Then the Prophet Jesus and his companions will turn to Allah (pray), and Allah will send birds with necks like Bactrian camels that will carry them and throw them wherever Allah wills. Then Allah will send such rain that no house made of soil or hair will remain. The rain will wash the earth, leaving it as clear and transparent as glass. Then the earth will be commanded to bring forth its produce and return its blessings. In those days, a single pomegranate will satisfy a group, and they will sit under its peel’s shade. Milk will be blessed so that a milking she-camel will suffice a large group of people, a milking cow will suffice a tribe, and a milking goat will suffice a family. Then suddenly Allah will send a pure wind that will touch people’s armpits and take the souls of every believer and every Muslim, leaving behind the worst people who will openly maintain relations like donkeys, and the Hour will be established upon them.”

The Angel Who Takes a Person’s Soul

Allah Almighty has said: “Say, the Angel of Death will take you who has been appointed over you, then you will be returned to your Lord.”

Hadith 38:

“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah Almighty sent the Angel of Death to Hazrat Musa (Moses) (peace be upon him). When the Angel of Death came to Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him), he struck him (because he came in the form of a human). The Angel of Death returned to the presence of Allah, the Exalted, and said that You sent me to a servant who is not ready for death. Allah Almighty said, ‘Go back to him and tell him to place his hand on the back of a bull; for every hair that comes under his hand, he will be granted a year of life in exchange.’ (The Angel of Death came again and conveyed Allah’s decision.) Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, ‘O Lord! What will happen after that?’ Allah Almighty said, ‘Then there is death.’ Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, ‘Then why does it not come immediately?’ Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that then Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) prayed to Allah to be brought so close to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) that if anyone throws a stone, it would reach Bayt al-Maqdis. Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘If I were there in Bayt al-Maqdis, I would show you his grave, which is by the roadside, beneath the red sand dune.'”

Questions of Angels to a Believer and a Wicked Person in the Grave

Hadith 39:

فيقولون: فلان بن فلان بأقبح أسمائه التى كان يسمى بها فى الدنيا، حتى ينتهى به إلى السماء الدنيا، فيستفتح له ، فلا يفتح له ، ثم قرأ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ﴿لَا تُفَتَّحُ لَهُمْ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ وَلَا يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّىٰ يَلِجَ الْجَمَلُ فِي سَمِّ الْخِيَاطِ﴾ Then Allah Almighty says: Write his record in a prisoner in the lowest earth, and his soul is cast out, then He recited: ﴿وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَتَخْطَفُهُ الطَّيْرُ أَوْ تَهْوِي بِهِ الرِّيحُ فِي مَكَانٍ سَحِيقٍ﴾ Then his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and sit him up and ask him: Who is your Lord? He says: Haah Haah, I do not know. They ask: What is your religion? He says: Haah Haah, I do not know. They ask: Who is this man who was sent among you? He says: Haah Haah, I do not know. Then a caller from the sky calls out that he has lied, so prepare for him a bed of fire and open for him a door to the fire. The heat and poison of it come to him, and his grave is constricted until his ribs are crushed. A man with a foul face, foul clothes, and a stinking smell comes to him and says: Rejoice in what harms you; this is your day which you were promised. He asks: Who are you? Your face looks like one who brings evil. He replies: I am your evil deed. He says: O Lord, do not raise the Hour.

Sheikh Shoaib has declared it authentic.

“And Hazrat Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We went with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to the funeral of an Ansari. When we reached the grave, we saw that the grave was not yet prepared. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sat down, and we also sat around him. It seemed as if birds were sitting on our heads. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had a wooden stick in his hand and began to scratch the ground with it. He raised his head and said two or three times: Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When a believer is in the last stages of this world and the first stages of the Hereafter, angels with faces as white as the sun come down from the sky. They carry the shroud and fragrance of Paradise. They come and sit before the eyes of that person. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits near his head and says: O pure soul! Depart towards Allah’s forgiveness and pleasure. His soul comes out gently, like a drop of water coming out of a leather container. The angels of Paradise do not leave that soul in the hands of the Angel of Death even for a moment; rather, they immediately take it and wrap it in the shroud and fragrance of Paradise. From it comes a fragrance like the finest musk on earth. The angels take it upwards, and wherever they pass among the groups and ranks of angels, they ask: Whose pure soul is this? They mention the best of the names by which he was called in this world, saying: This is so-and-so, son of so-and-so. They take him up to the first heaven and ask for the door to be opened for him, and it is opened at their request. Then the angels of each heaven take that soul to the next heaven, and so on until he reaches the seventh heaven. Allah Almighty says: Write My servant’s (record) in the book علين and return him to the earth, for I created him from it, so I will return him to it and then bring him out a second time from it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Then his soul is returned to his body. Two angels come to him, sit him up, and ask: Who is your Lord? He says: My Lord is Allah. They ask: What is your religion? He says: My religion is Islam. They ask: Who is this man who was sent among you? He replies: He is the Messenger of Allah. They ask: How do you know this? He says: I read Allah’s Book, believed in it, and confirmed it. Then a caller from the sky announces: My servant has spoken the truth. Prepare a bed of Paradise for him, clothe him with the garments of Paradise, and open a door for him from Paradise. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Then the winds and fragrances of Paradise begin to come to him, and the grave is expanded for him as far as the eye can see. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A very handsome, well-dressed man with a pleasant fragrance comes to him and says: Rejoice in everything that pleases you; this is the day you were promised. The one in the grave asks: Who are you? Your face looks like one who brings good news. He replies: I am your good deed. He says: O my Lord! Do not establish the Hour so that I may return to my family and wealth. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When a disbeliever departs from this world and is going towards the Hereafter, angels with black faces come down from the sky. They carry mats and sit before him. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits near his head and says: O impure soul! Depart towards Allah’s wrath and displeasure. His soul scatters in his body. Then the angel pulls it out as if pulling a thorny rod from wet wool. When the angel takes it out, the other angels do not leave that soul in his hands even for a moment; rather, they immediately wrap it in mats. The foulest stench on earth comes from it. The angels take it upwards. Wherever they pass among the groups of angels, they ask: Whose impure soul is this? They mention the worst and filthiest names by which he was called in this world, saying: This is so-and-so, son of so-and-so. They take him up to the first heaven and ask for the door to be opened, but the door of heaven is not opened for him. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this verse: لَا تُفَتَّحُ لَهُمْ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ وَلَا يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّىٰ يَلِجَ الْجَمَلُ فِي سَمِّ الْخِيَاطِ

meaning: The gates of heaven will not be opened for their souls to ascend, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. Allah Almighty says: Write his (record) in the book beneath the earth سجين. Then his soul is cast towards the earth. At this moment, the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this verse: ﴿وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَتَخْطَفُهُ الطَّيْرُ أَوْ تَهْوِي بِهِ الرِّيحُ فِي مَكَانٍ سَحِيقٍ﴾

meaning: And whoever associates others with Allah, it is as if he fell from the sky and the birds snatched him or the wind carried him away to a distant place. Then his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him, sit him up, and ask: Who is your Lord? He says: Haah Haah! I do not know. They ask: What is your religion? He says: Haah Haah! I do not know. They ask: Who is this man who was sent among you? He says: Haah Haah! I do not know. A caller from the sky announces: He is a liar. Prepare a bed of Hell for him and open a door to Hell for him. Then the heat and stench of Hell come to him. His grave is so constricted that his ribs crush each other. A very ugly, foul-smelling man with dirty clothes comes to him and says: Rejoice in everything that displeases you; this is the day you were promised. He asks: Who are you? Your face looks like one who brings evil. He replies: I am your evil deed. The one in the grave says: O my Lord! Do not establish the Hour.”

Hadith 40:

Muhaddith Albani has graded it as “Hasan”.
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: When a dead person is buried in the grave, two black-colored angels come to him, their eyes are blue. One of them is called Munkar and the other is called Nakir. They will ask him, ‘What is your opinion about this person (i.e., Muhammad PBUH)?’ He will reply, ‘He is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad (PBUH) is His servant and His Messenger.’ They will say, ‘We knew that you would say this.’ Afterwards, his grave is expanded seventy cubits in length and seventy cubits in width. Then his grave is illuminated and he is told, ‘You are in a state of sleep.’ He will say, ‘Let me return to my family so that I may inform them (of these conditions).’ They will say, ‘You are like a bride in a state of rest, whom only the one most beloved to her family can awaken (meaning her husband).’ Until Allah raises him from his place of rest. And if he is a hypocrite, he will say, ‘I heard people say such things, but I have no knowledge.’ Both angels will say to him, ‘We knew that you would say this.’ Then the grave will be commanded to contract upon him, and it will contract upon him, causing his ribs to be crushed. Thus, he will remain afflicted with the torment of the grave until Allah raises him from his grave.”
