Effective Methods to Attain Focus and Humility in Salah

✿ Complete Attention and Devotion Towards Allah in Salah ✿

During Salah, one must firmly establish the belief in their heart and mind that they are standing in the majestic court of Allah Almighty. One’s focus, both outwardly and inwardly, should be solely directed toward Allah.
If Satan attempts to distract through stray thoughts during prayer, the following method should be adopted:

✔ Method of Protection from Satanic Whispers

Sayyiduna ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ (RA) asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

“O Messenger of Allah! Satan comes between me and my recitation in prayer, and he causes confusion in my recitation.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied:

“That is a devil called Khinzab. When you sense his presence, recite ‘أَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰہِ’ and spit lightly to your left three times.”

Sayyiduna ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ (RA) states:

“I acted upon this advice, and Allah Almighty removed that devil from me.”
(Muslim: Kitāb al-Salām, Chapter: Seeking refuge from Satanic whispers in Salah, 3022)

✿ Practical Demonstration of the Fear of Allah in Salah ✿

The Salah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was marked by intense fear and humility before Allah:

The state of his Salah:

“When he prayed, a sound like the boiling of a pot would come from his chest due to weeping.”
(Abū Dāwūd: Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Chapter: Weeping in Salah, 409; Al-Nasāʾī: 3/31, 5121)

✔ Observing Proper Etiquette and Decorum in Salah

We must offer our Salah with beauty, attention, and utmost respect. However, some people display heedlessness, such as:

◈ Not raising the hands properly to shoulder level during Rafʿ al-Yadayn
◈ Slight or minimal hand or finger movements being deemed sufficient
◈ Rolling up or adjusting sleeves during Salah
◈ Displaying complete inattention or disrespect, while the same individuals stand respectfully before worldly authorities

❓Question: Is disrespect acceptable in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty?!

✿ The Prophet ﷺ’s Emphasis on the Proper Performance of Salah ✿

Narration from Sayyiduna Abū Hurayrah (RA):
After prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“O so-and-so! Why do you not perform your Salah with excellence and beauty?
Why does the worshiper not pay attention to how he is performing his Salah, even though it is for his own benefit?
By Allah! I see in front of me just as I see behind me.”

(Muslim: Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Chapter: Command to improve Salah, complete it, and observe humility therein, 324)

✔ Thinking of the Final Prayer Enhances Khushūʿ

Narration of Sayyiduna Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī (RA):
A Companion asked:

“O Messenger of Allah! Give me a brief but comprehensive advice.”

The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“When you stand for prayer, pray as if it is your last prayer.
Do not utter anything for which you would later need to apologize.
And give up hope in what people possess.”

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Albānī: 104)

✿ Lack of Khushūʿ is a Sign of the Decline of Knowledge ✿

Narration of Sayyiduna ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit (RA):

“The first thing to be taken away from the people regarding knowledge will be Khushūʿ (humility and awe).
It may be that there will remain no one in the mosque who prays with Khushūʿ.”

(Tirmidhī: Kitāb al-ʿIlm, Chapter: Disappearance of knowledge, 3562)

✔ The Effect of Remembering Death in Salah

Narration of Sayyiduna Anas (RA):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Remember death in your prayer, for when a person remembers death during his prayer, he performs it in the best possible manner.
And pray like the one who is certain this is his final prayer, and he will not be able to pray again thereafter.”

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Albānī: 1241)
