Sayyida Humna bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that I had a severe type of istihaza (non-menstrual bleeding). I came to the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم to inform him about it and to seek guidance. I found him at the house of my sister Zainab bint Jahsh, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have a severe type of istihaza, what do you command me regarding it? It has prevented me from praying and fasting. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
أنعت لك الكرسف فإنه يذهب الدم
“I advise you to use cotton, for it will stop the blood.”
She said: It is much more than that. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Then use a cloth. (She said) It is even more than that. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Then place some cloth under the cloth. She said: The matter is more severe than that; I bleed like water. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
سامرك بأمرين أيهما صنعت، أجزأ عنك، فإن قويت عليهما فأنتم أعلم
“I command you with two things; whichever of them you do will suffice you. If you are able to do both, then you know your condition better.”
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to her:
إنما هي ركضة من الشيطان فتحيضي ستة أيام أو سبعة أيام فى علم الله، ثم اغتسلي، فإذا رأيت أنك قد طهرت واستنقات فصلي أربعا وعشرين ليلة، أو ثلاثا وعشرين ليله وأيامها، وصومي وصلي، فإن ذلك يجيزئك، وكذلك فافعلي كما تحيض النساء، وكما يطهرن لميقات حيضهن وطهرن، فإن قويت على أن تؤخري الظهر، وتعجلي العصر، ثم تغتسلين حين تطهرين، وتصلين الظهر والعصر جميعا، ثم تؤخرين المغرب، وتعجلين العشاء ثم تغتسلين وتجمعين بين الصلاتين فافعلي، وتغتسلين مع الصبح وتصلين، وكذلك فافعلي وصومي إن قويت على ذلك
“This is a satanic disease. Count yourself as menstruating for six or seven days as usual, then perform ghusl (ritual bath). After that, when you see that you are pure and clean, pray and fast for twenty-three or twenty-four days. This will be sufficient for you. Every month do as the menstruating women do during their specified days and after they become pure. And if you are able to delay the Dhuhr prayer and hasten the Asr prayer, then perform ghusl and pray Dhuhr and Asr together. Similarly, delay Maghrib and bring forward Isha, then perform ghusl and pray both prayers together. Do like this and perform ghusl for Fajr prayer and fast. If you can do this, then do so.”
The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
وهو أعجب الأمرين إلى
“And of the two matters, I prefer this one (performing ghusl and combining prayers).”
