❖ Translation: Does a Rak‘ah Count if One Joins During Rukū‘ with the Congregation? ❖

✍ Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori

❀ Issue: If a person joins the congregation while it is in Rukū‘

Does that Rak‘ah count for him or not?

There is a difference of opinion on this issue. However, the dominant view is that without reciting Surah Al-Fātiḥah, the Rak‘ah will not be counted.

◈ View of the Majority (Jumhūr) and the Four Imams:

Whoever joins and performs only the Rukū‘, his Rak‘ah is considered complete.

Al-‘Aynī (رحمه الله) says:
❝Whoever attains the Rukū‘ has attained the Rak‘ah.❞

Shaykh Al-Albānī (رحمه الله) gives preference to this view.

Saudi Permanent Committee for Fatwas also supports this view.

Shaykh As-Sa‘dī (رحمه الله) showed inclination towards this view.

Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله) issued a fatwa in accordance with it.

✔ Evidence from Hadith Used by the Majority:

Narrated by Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“إذا جئتم إلى الصلاة ونحن سجود فاسجدوا ولا تعتدوها شيئا ومن أدرك الركعة فقد أدرك الصلاة“

“When you come to the prayer and we are in prostration, then join in prostration, but do not count it as anything. And whoever catches a Rak‘ah (the majority interpret this as catching Rukū‘), he has caught the prayer.”

✿ Weak Hadiths that Specify the Word “Rukū‘” in Place of “Rak‘ah”:

For example:

“من أدرك الركوع من الركعة الأخيرة فى صلاته يوم الجمعة فليضف إليها ركعة أخرى“

“Whoever attains the Rukū‘ of the last Rak‘ah in the Friday prayer should add another Rak‘ah to it.”

Another Hadith:
Abū Bakrah (رضي الله عنه) performed Rukū‘ before reaching the row, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him:

“زادك الله حرصا ولا تعد“

“May Allah increase your eagerness, but do not do it again.”

References: Bukhārī: 783; Abū Dāwūd: 684

Response to this:
Although the Hadith does not mention repeating the prayer, it also does not confirm that the Prophet ﷺ considered that Rak‘ah valid.

  • As-Sayl al-Jarrār: 1/265

✦ Preferred View (Rājiḥ):

A Rak‘ah in which Surah Al-Fātiḥah is not recited will not be counted.

◈ View of Imam Bukhārī (رحمه الله):

In his book Al-Qirā’ah Khalfa al-Imām, he recorded the statement of Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه):

❝If you find the congregation in Rukū‘, do not count that Rak‘ah.❞
Reference: Nayl al-Awṭār: 2/41

◈ Shawkānī (رحمه الله):

He considered the opinion of the majority to be weak.
Reference: Same as above

◈ Ibn Ḥazm (رحمه الله):

He stated that for a Rak‘ah to be counted, it must include both standing (Qiyām) and recitation (Qirā’ah).
Reference: Al-Muḥallā bi-l-Āthār: 2/274

◈ Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān (رحمه الله):

He also holds this opinion.
Reference: Ar-Rawḍah an-Nadiyyah: 1/326

🟢 Conclusion:
The issue has two well-supported positions. However, the preferred and more cautious opinion is that a Rak‘ah without reciting Surah Al-Fātiḥah is not valid and thus should not be counted.
