❖ Salah for a Sick Person – Complete Guidelines

(Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām)

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!

A sick person must perform Salah according to his ability, following these steps. He should pray in whichever position he is capable of.

① Performing Salah While Standing

◈ It is obligatory for the sick person to pray while standing, even if leaning or holding onto a wall or stick for support.
◈ If standing is possible by any means, it must be done.

② Performing Salah While Sitting

◈ If unable to stand, he should pray sitting.
◈ The best way is to sit cross-legged in the place of standing and bowing.

③ Performing Salah While Lying on One Side

◈ If unable to sit, he should lie on his right side facing the Qiblah.
◈ If facing Qiblah is not possible, pray in whichever direction he is positioned.
◈ Repeating the prayer later is not required.

④ Performing Salah While Lying on the Back

◈ If unable to lie on the side, lie on the back with feet towards the Qiblah.
◈ It is better to slightly raise the head towards the Qiblah.
◈ If even this is not possible, pray in the same position without repeating later.

⑤ Indicating Rukūʿ and Sujūd

◈ Rukūʿ and Sujūd are obligatory, but if physical performance is impossible:
❀ Indicate with the head.
❀ Lower the head more for Sujūd than for Rukūʿ.

◈ If Sujūd is not possible but Rukūʿ is:
❀ Perform Rukūʿ physically and Sujūd by indication.

◈ If Rukūʿ is not possible but Sujūd is:
❀ Perform Sujūd physically and indicate Rukūʿ.

⑥ Indicating with the Eyes

◈ If even head movement is not possible:
❀ Indicate with the eyes.
✿ For Rukūʿ, close the eyes slightly.
✿ For Sujūd, close the eyes more.

◈ Indicating with the finger is not permissible as there is no evidence for it in Qur’an, Sunnah, or scholars’ statements.

⑦ Performing Salah with the Heart

◈ If unable to move head or eyes:
❀ Perform Salah in the heart with intention.
❀ Mentally say Takbīr, recite, and intend Rukūʿ, Sujūd, standing, and sitting.

Hadith:

«وَلِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Bāb Kayfa Kāna Bad’ al-Waḥy, Ḥadīth 1)
“Each person will have only what he intended.”

⑧ Performing Salah on Time

◈ A sick person must pray on time and perform whatever Fard prayers he is able to.
◈ If praying on time is difficult:
❀ Combine Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr, and Maghrib and ʿIshā’.

Jamʿ Taqdīm:

  • Pray ʿAṣr in Ẓuhr time, ʿIshā’ in Maghrib time.

Jamʿ Taʾkhīr:

  • Pray Ẓuhr in ʿAṣr time, Maghrib in ʿIshā’ time.

❀ Choose whichever is easier.
◈ Fajr must be prayed on time; it cannot be combined.

⑨ If the Sick Person Is a Traveler

◈ If traveling for treatment:
❀ Shorten prayers (Qasr):
✿ Pray 2 rakʿahs for Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, and ʿIshā’.
✿ Continue Qasr until returning home, regardless of trip length.
