Authentic Hadiths and Rulings on Women Attending the Mosque

① Permission for Women to Attend the Mosque

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“When your women seek permission to go to the mosque, do not prevent them.”
(Bukhari, Adhān, Chapter: A Woman Seeking Permission from Her Husband to Go to the Mosque, 900; Muslim: 442)

② Emphasis on Not Preventing Women

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Do not prevent your women from going to the mosque, although their homes are better for them.”
(Abu Dawud: 565; authenticated by al-Ḥākim, Ibn Khuzaymah, and Dhahabī)

Note: This shows that while attending the mosque is allowed, praying at home is more virtuous for women.

③ Best Place of Prayer for a Woman

Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها said:

“The best mosque for women is their home.”
(Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ṣaḥīḥah, al-Albānī: 1349)

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“A woman’s prayer in her room is better than her prayer in her courtyard, and her prayer in her private chamber is better than her prayer in her house.”
(Abu Dawud: 570; al-Ḥākim: 902; Ibn Khuzaymah: 1688; authenticated by Dhahabī)

④ Conditions and Etiquettes for Women Coming to the Mosque

❀ Prohibition of Wearing Perfume

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Any woman who wishes to go to the mosque should not wear perfume.”
(Muslim: 443)

He ﷺ also said:

“If a woman applies perfume, she should not attend ‘Ishā’ prayer with us.”
(Muslim: 444)

⑤ ‘Ā’ishah رضي الله عنها’s Caution

Umm al-Mu’minīn ‘Ā’ishah رضي الله عنها said:

“If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had seen what the women are doing now, he would have prevented them from going to the mosques just as the Banī Isrā’īl prevented their women.”
(Bukhari: 869; Muslim: 445)
