5 Essential Islamic Guidelines for Salah During Travel
1. Adhan and Iqamah While Travelling
Sayyiduna Malik ibn al-Huwayrith (RA) narrated:
“When you travel and the time for prayer comes, call the adhan and the iqamah, and let the eldest among you lead the prayer.”
(Bukhari, al-Adhan, Bab al-Adhan lil-Musafir idha Kanu Jama‘ah wal-Iqamah: 630)
2. Ruling for a Traveller Praying Behind a Resident Imam
A traveller praying behind a resident imam must pray the full four rak‘ahs — no qasr.
- Nafi‘ said:
“When Ibn ‘Umar (RA) prayed behind an imam, he prayed four rak‘ahs; when alone, he prayed two.”
(Muwatta’ Malik, Qasr al-Salah fi al-Safar: 17) - Ibn ‘Abbas (RA):
“This is the Sunnah of Abu al-Qasim ﷺ — if a traveller prays behind a resident, he prays full; otherwise, he shortens.”
(al-Albani, Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah 3672)
3. Sunnah and Nafl Prayers in Travel
Ibn ‘Umar (RA) said:
“I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during travel, and he never prayed more than two rak‘ahs until Allah took his soul. I also accompanied Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and ‘Uthman (RA), and they did the same. Allah has said: ‘Following the Messenger of Allah is best for you.’”
(Bukhari 1100, 1102; Muslim 685)
- Ibn ‘Umar (RA) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not pray any voluntary prayers before or after the obligatory prayers during travel.”
(Muslim 1115)
4. Completing Salah in Travel
- ‘Aishah (RA) used to sometimes pray full four rak‘ahs while travelling, like ‘Uthman (RA).
(Bukhari 1090; Muslim 686) - Ibn ‘Umar (RA) said:
“If I wanted to pray nafl after qasr, I would have prayed the obligatory prayer in full.”
(al-Albani, Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah 2816)
5. Leading the Prayer as a Guest
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When you visit a people, do not lead them in prayer; rather, let one of them lead the prayer.”
(Abu Dawud 596)
