5 Authentic Hadiths on the Virtue of Congregational Prayer

① Importance of Attending Congregational Prayer

Hadith of ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd رضي الله عنه:

“Whoever wishes to meet Allah on the Day of Judgment as a Muslim, let him guard his prayers and perform them where the call to prayer is given. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the ways of guidance, and one of those ways is to pray in the mosque where the adhān is called.
If you pray in your homes like those who stay behind from the congregation, you will abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ, and if you abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ, you will go astray.
When a man performs ablution well and goes to the mosque, Allah writes for him a good deed for every step, raises him a degree, and erases from him a sin. No one stays away from the congregation except a known hypocrite. Even the sick used to be brought supported by two men to stand in the row.”
(Muslim, Mosques, Chapter: Congregational Prayer from the Sunnahs of Guidance, 654)

② Reward: 27 Times More

Hadith of ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما:

“Prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times superior to prayer offered alone.”
(Bukhari: 645; Muslim: 650)

③ The More the Congregation, the Greater the Reward

Hadith of Ubayy ibn Ka‘b رضي الله عنه:

“A man’s prayer with another man is purer and greater in reward than his prayer alone, and his prayer with two men is purer and greater than his prayer with one man, and the more they are, the more beloved it is to Allah.”
(Abu Dawud: 554)

④ Allah’s Pleasure in Congregational Prayer

Hadith of ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما:

“Indeed, Allah is very pleased with the congregational prayer.”
(Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ṣaḥīḥah, al-Albānī: 1562)

⑤ The Mosque as the Home of the Righteous

Letter of Salmān رضي الله عنه to Abū al-Dardā’ رضي الله عنه:

“O my brother, adhere to the mosque, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘The mosque is the home of every pious person.’”
(Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ṣaḥīḥah, al-Albānī: 1647)
