10 Virtues of Takbīr Ūlā, Friday Fajr, and the First Row
① Virtue of Attending Congregational Prayer with Takbīr Ūlā
Sayyiduna Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever prays for Allah forty days in congregation, catching the first takbīr (takbīr ūlā), two freedoms are written for him: freedom from the Fire and freedom from hypocrisy.”
(Tirmidhī, Prayer, Chapter on the Virtue of Takbīr Ūlā: 241)
② Virtue of Friday Fajr in Congregation
Sayyiduna ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The most virtuous prayer in the sight of Allah is Fajr in congregation on Friday.”
(Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ṣaḥīḥah, al-Albānī: 1566)
③ Great Reward for Standing in the First Row
Sayyiduna Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“If people knew the reward for coming early to the prayer, they would race for it; if they knew the reward for ‘Ishā’ and Fajr (in congregation), they would come even if crawling; and if they knew the reward for the first row, they would draw lots for it.”
(Bukhari: 615; Muslim: 437)
④ Prophet ﷺ Seeking Forgiveness for the First Row
Sayyiduna ‘Irbāḍ ibn Sāriyah رضي الله عنه narrates:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would seek forgiveness three times for the first row and once for the second.”
(Ibn Mājah, Establishing Prayer, Virtue of the First Row: 817)
⑤ Instruction to Complete the Front Row First
Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه narrates:
“Complete the first row, then the one nearest to it, and if there is any deficiency, let it be in the last row.”
(Abu Dawud: 671 — authenticated by Ibn Khuzaymah & Ibn Ḥibbān)
⑥ Best and Worst Rows for Men and Women
Sayyiduna Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best rows for men are the first rows and the worst are the last; the worst rows for women are the first rows and the best are the last.”
(Muslim: 440)
Imām Nawawī رحمه الله explained:
This applies when men and women pray together in the same congregation. Separation between them, such as with children in between, removes this concern.
⑦ Encouragement to Sit Close to the Imām
Sayyiduna Samurah ibn Jundub رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Attend the gatherings of admonition and sit close to the imām, for the one who keeps away from the imām will be kept away in Paradise, even if he enters it.”
(Abu Dawud: 1108)
⑧ Filling the First Row and Following Order
Sayyiduna Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Come closer to me and complete the first row, then let those behind follow your example. When people keep falling back from the first row, Allah will keep them back.”
(Muslim: 438)
⑨ First Row Linked to Allah’s Mercy
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah and His angels send blessings upon the first row.”
(Abu Dawud: 664 — Sahih according to al-Ḥākim, Ibn Ḥibbān, and Ibn Khuzaymah)
⑩ First Takbīr and Early Rows as a Sign of Faith
Catching the takbīr ūlā and standing in the front rows consistently is a mark of strong īmān, as implied in the prophetic emphasis and the Companions’ eagerness to secure these virtues.
