① The Obligation of Jumu’ah
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Jumu’ah prayer is obligatory upon every Muslim except a slave, a woman, a child, and a sick person.”
(Abu Dawud: As-Salah, Chapter: Jumu’ah for the Slave and Woman: 1067 — Al-Nawawi declared it authentic)
Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Baz رحمه الله said:
“If someone cannot attend the Jumu’ah prayer with the Muslims due to a Shari‘ah-approved excuse like illness or other causes, he should pray Zuhr instead. Likewise, women, travelers, and desert dwellers pray Zuhr as per the Sunnah.”
(Fatawa Islamiyyah, vol. 1, p. 135)
② Jumu’ah in Villages
Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنهما said:
“After the Prophet’s Mosque, the first Jumu’ah prayed was in the village of Jawatha in Bahrain in the mosque of the tribe of Abdul Qays.”
(Bukhari: Jumu’ah, Chapter: Jumu’ah in Villages and Towns: 892)
It shows Jumu’ah is also obligatory in villages, and leaving it without excuse is sinful.
As’ad ibn Zurara رضي الله عنه led Jumu’ah in the village of Hazm al-Nabit (about 1 mile from Madinah) with forty worshippers present.
(Abu Dawud: Jumu’ah, Chapter: Jumu’ah in Villages: 1069 — Declared authentic by Al-Hakim, Ibn Khuzaymah, and Al-Dhahabi)
③ Permission to Miss Jumu’ah on a Rainy Day
On a rainy day at Hunayn, the Prophet ﷺ told the mu’adhdhin:
“Announce to the people to pray in their dwellings.” It was a Friday.
(Abu Dawud: As-Salah, Chapter: Jumu’ah on a Rainy Day: 1051, 1059 — Authenticated by Al-Hakim, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and Al-Dhahabi)
④ When ‘Eid and Jumu’ah Fall on the Same Day
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported:
“Today two ‘Eids have coincided. Whoever wishes, ‘Eid will suffice for him, but we will pray both.”
(Abu Dawud: As-Salah, Chapter: When Friday Coincides with ‘Eid: 1073 — Authenticated by Al-Hakim and Al-Dhahabi)
Ibn Zubair رضي الله عنهما prayed only ‘Eid when it coincided with Jumu’ah and skipped Jumu’ah. Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنهما said:
“This is according to the Sunnah.”
(Nasa’i: Salat al-‘Eidayn, Abu Dawud: 1072 — Ibn Khuzaymah authenticated it)
⑤ Dress Code for Jumu’ah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“If you can, keep a pair of clothes especially for Jumu’ah besides your daily clothes.”
(Ibn Majah: Iqamat as-Salah, Abu Dawud: 1078 — Authenticated by Ibn Hibban and Ibn Khuzaymah)
Anas رضي الله عنه said:
“The Prophet ﷺ would pray Jumu’ah early in cold weather and delay it in hot weather.”
(Bukhari: Jumu’ah, Chapter: In Severe Heat: 906)
⑥ Joining in the Final Tashahhud
Shaykh Abdullah bin Jibreen رحمه الله said:
“Whoever catches less than one rak‘ah of Jumu’ah has missed it and should pray Zuhr (four rak‘ahs).”
(Fatawa Islamiyyah, vol. 1, p. 538)
Shaykh bin Baz رحمه الله said:
“If a person joins in sajdah or tashahhud, he must pray Zuhr, as Jumu’ah requires catching at least one rak‘ah.”
(Fatawa Islamiyyah, vol. 1, p. 541)
⑦ Sunnah Prayers Before Jumu’ah
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported:
“Whoever performs ghusl, goes to Jumu’ah, prays as much as was destined for him, remains silent during the khutbah until it ends, and then prays with the imam, his sins from this Jumu’ah to the next and an additional three days will be forgiven. But whoever plays with pebbles has engaged in idle acts.”
(Muslim: Jumu’ah, Chapter: Virtue of Listening to the Khutbah: 857)
This shows there are no fixed sunnah rak‘ahs before Jumu’ah; pray as much as possible before the khutbah, at least two rak‘ahs.
⑧ Bid‘ah: “Cautionary Zuhr” After Jumu’ah
Some people pray an “extra Zuhr” after Jumu’ah as a precaution. This has no basis in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ or the practice of the Sahabah.
If it were correct, the Prophet ﷺ would have instructed it. It is an innovation to be avoided.
⑨ Fasting Only on Friday
The Prophet ﷺ forbade fasting on Friday alone or singling out its night (Thursday night) for special prayer.
(Muslim: Siyam, Chapter: Dislike of Fasting Friday Alone: 1144)
⑩ Jumu’ah in Remote Areas
Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما saw people praying Jumu’ah between Makkah and Madinah and did not object, indicating that Jumu’ah can be held wherever people live in a settled community.
(Abdul Razzaq 3/170 — Authenticated by Ibn Hajar)
