❖ Question:

A person purchased a plot with the intention of building a personal residence. However, after three years, he decided to sell it in order to earn profit. Will Zakat be due for the previous years as well?

❖ Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿamma baʿd!

Zakat for the past years will not be obligatory upon him because at that time his intention was to use the plot for personal residence.

However, once he changes his intention and decides to sell the plot for profit, Zakat becomes obligatory after the completion of one year from that point onward.
