✦ Consuming Halal: A Condition for Acceptance of Worship

One of the conditions for the acceptance of worship is that a person must consume only halal (lawful) sustenance. If one’s food, drink, or clothing involves any element of haram (unlawful) earnings, none of their acts of worship will be accepted.

✦ Worship Is Not Accepted from One Who Consumes Haram

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Indeed, Allah is Pure and only accepts what is pure.”

He then mentioned that Allah commanded His messengers with the following:

(يَا أَيُّهَا الرُّسُلُ كُلُوا مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَاعْمَلُوا صَالِحًا ۖ إِنِّي بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌ)
“O Messengers! Eat from the good things and act righteously. Surely, I am All-Aware of what you do.” (Surah Al-Mu’minun: 51)

This same command was given to the believers:

(يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُلُوا مِن طَيِّبَاتِ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ)
“O you who believe! Eat from the good things We have provided for you.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 172)

Then the Prophet ﷺ described a man:

“He travels extensively, disheveled and dusty, raising his hands to the sky and supplicating, ‘O Lord, O Lord!’ while his food is haram, his drink is haram, his clothing is haram, and he is nourished with haram. How can such a person’s supplication be accepted?”

✦ Halal Sustenance Ensures Acceptance of Supplication and Worship

Hafiz Ibn Kathir stated:

“A halal morsel is a means for acceptance of dua and worship, whereas a haram morsel prevents acceptance.”

Saeed ibn Jubayr and Dhahhak explained the verse:
“Eat from the good things”
to mean halal provision.

✦ Charity from Haram Wealth Is Not Accepted

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever earns haram wealth and then gives it in charity, it will not be accepted. And if he spends from it, it will bring no blessing.”

Thus, the purity of one’s income is directly linked to the efficacy and acceptance of their worship and charity.
