📿 When the Fajr Congregation Begins — When Should Sunnah Be Offered?
✍️ Written by: Qari Usama bin Abdussalam (Hafizahullah)
❖ Introduction ❖
If one does not get the opportunity to offer the Sunnah prayers of Fajr and the congregational (Fard) prayer has already commenced, then it is necessary to first join the congregation. The Sunnah can be offered later. The following are evidences supporting this practice:
📖 Evidence from the Qur’an
Allah ﷻ says:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ
(O you who believe! Respond to Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life)
📖 Surah al-Anfal: 24
This verse indicates that joining the congregation should be given priority, as participating in it is a command from the religion.
📚 Evidences from Hadith
① Do Not Offer Sunnah Once the Congregation Has Started
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“إِذَا أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلَا صَلَاةَ إِلَّا الْمَكْتُوبَةُ“
(When the prayer is established, there is no prayer except the obligatory one.)
📖 Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 710
This Hadith clearly shows that if the Iqamah has been called, then Sunnah should be left, and one should immediately join the obligatory prayer.
② Fajr Sunnah Can Be Offered Later
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“مَنْ لَمْ يُصَلِّ رَكْعَتَيِ الفَجْرِ فَلْيُصَلِّهِمَا بَعْدَ مَا تَطْلُعُ الشَّمْسُ“
(Whoever has not offered the two Rak‘ahs of Fajr, let him pray them after the sun has risen.)
📖 Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith: 423 | Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Hadith: 1267
This Hadith indicates that if the Sunnah of Fajr are missed, they can still be performed after sunrise.
☀ Evidence from the Practice of the Companions
① Verdict of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما)
Whenever Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) would come to the mosque and see that the congregation had already begun, he would abandon the Sunnah and immediately join the congregation.
📖 Musannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah, Hadith: 7350
This demonstrates that the Companions would first join the congregation and offer the Sunnah prayers afterward.
✅ Conclusion
If the Fajr congregation has commenced, one should immediately join the congregation and may offer the Sunnah prayers later.
If there is no time before sunrise, it is permissible to offer them after sunrise.
This was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, the Sahabah, and the Salaf as-Salihīn.
Hence, if one misses the Sunnah of Fajr, there is no need to worry. Simply join the congregational prayer and offer the Sunnah afterwards.
