Two Authentic Hadiths Regarding Women’s Row Arrangement
◈ How the Prophet ﷺ Arranged Women in Congregational Prayer
① Hadith of Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه
Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in a voluntary prayer in our house. I and a boy stood in one row behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and my mother, Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها, stood alone in one row behind us.”
(Bukhari, Adhān, Chapter: A Woman Alone Forms a Row, 727; Muslim, Mosques, Chapter: Permissibility of Congregation in Voluntary Prayer, 658)
② Another Hadith of Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه
Anas رضي الله عنه narrates:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to our house when I, my mother, and my maternal aunt were present. He led us in a voluntary prayer, placing me on his right side and placing the women in a row behind us.”
(Muslim, Mosques: 660)
Ruling Derived:
- If even a single woman participates in the congregation and stands behind the men, she is counted as one complete row by herself.
- Women in a congregation are positioned in a separate row behind the men, regardless of their number.
