It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Where are those who love each other for My greatness? Today I will grant them a place under My shade, on the Day when there will be no shade except My shade.”

Hazrat Abu Idris Khulani, may Allah have mercy on him, said: I entered the mosque in Damascus. There I saw a young man whose front teeth were very bright, and people were sitting with him. If people had any disagreement, they would refer to him for resolving the issue, and when he presented something, they would accept his statement. I asked about this young man and was told that he was Hazrat Mu’adh ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him. The next day, I went to the mosque early in the morning and found him there before me; he had preceded me in coming early. I found him in the state of prayer and waited for him until he finished his prayer. Then I went towards him and greeted him. I said: By Allah! I love you for the sake of Allah. He asked: Really? I said: By Allah, yes. He asked again: Really? I said: By Allah, really. Then he asked: Really? I said: By Allah, I truly love you for the sake of Allah. Then he grabbed the edge of my cloak and pulled me towards him and said: Be glad. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say: Allah, the Exalted, said: My love will be obligatory for those who love each other for My sake, sit together for My sake, meet each other for My sake, and spend on each other for My sake.

Hazrat Abu Idris Aaidhullah bin Abdullah narrates that one day he entered the mosque with the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It was the early period of the caliphate of Umar ibn Khattab He said: I sat in a gathering where there were about twenty people. Everyone was discussing the Hadith of the Messenger ﷺ, and among them was a young man with a deep wheatish complexion, a bright face, and a sweet tongue. He was the youngest among the people. Whenever these people had any question about Hadith, they would turn to this young man, and he would narrate the Hadith to them. While Aaidhullah was sitting with them in their circle, the prayer time came, and because of the prayer, they separated. Aaidhullah swore by me that nothing like illness or any serious need ever befell him that kept him away from this path for long. Hoping that morning would come so he could meet them again, he said: As soon as morning came, I set out towards the mosque. Then I searched back and forth but did not meet any of them. Then he arrived early at noon as well and kept searching back and forth, when suddenly the same young man, to whom people used to refer for their Hadith matters, was praying by a pillar in the mosque. Aaidhullah stood by that pillar, and he sat leaning against it. (Aaidhullah says) I kept looking at him until he realized that I needed something from him. (I asked) May Allah keep you well, have you prayed? The young man replied: Yes. Then I stood up and wrapped a sheet around myself and sat before him. Neither was he narrating anything to me, nor was I initiating anything, until I thought the prayer would separate us, so I said: May Allah keep you well, please narrate Hadith to me, I love you and your Hadith. He said: Do you really love me and my Hadith? I said: By the One besides whom there is no true deity, I certainly love you and your Hadith. Then the young man asked: Why do you love me and my Hadith? By Allah, there is no kinship between us, nor have I given you any wealth. I said: I love you because of the greatness and majesty of Allah. He said: Do you truly love me because of Allah’s greatness and majesty? I said: By Allah, I love you because of Allah’s greatness and majesty. Then the narrator said: He grabbed the edge of my sheet and pulled it to one side until he brought me close to himself. Then he said: Rejoice, I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Surely those who love each other for the greatness of Allah will be under the shade of Allah’s Throne on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade. When he narrated Hadith to me, the prayer time came again. I asked him: O servant of Allah! Who are you? He said: Muadh bin Jabal, and Aaidhullah used to frequently narrate Hadith from Muadh bin Jabal.

Hazrat Abu Muslim Khulani narrated that I came to the mosque of the people of Damascus, where a gathering of some middle-aged companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was taking place. Among them was a young man with deep-set eyes and very bright front teeth. Whenever they had a disagreement about something, they would refer to this young man. I asked one of my companions who this young man was. He told me that this was Mu’adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). Then I came at night, but the people were not present. The next day I came again, but they did not come either. Then I went at noon and suddenly found this young man praying by a pillar. I also prayed. Then I turned towards him and greeted him with salam. Then I approached him and said: Surely, I love you for the sake of Allah. He pulled me towards himself and said: What did you say? I said: Surely, I love you for the sake of Allah. He said: I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrating from my Lord (i.e., a Hadith Qudsi) that those who love each other for the sake of Allah will be under the shade of Allah’s Throne on pulpits of light on the Day when there will be no shade except Allah’s shade. Abu Muslim Khulani says that I left the mosque until Ibadah ibn Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioning from my Lord, the Almighty: My love has become obligatory for those who love each other for My sake. My love has become obligatory for those who spend on each other for My sake. My love has become obligatory for those who meet each other for My sake. And those who love each other for the sake of Allah will be under the shade of Allah’s Throne on pulpits of light, besides which there will be no other shade.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Zubayh that Sharhabil ibn Samat called Amr ibn Absa Salmi and said: O Ibn Absa, can you tell me a hadith that you yourself heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which contains no exaggeration or falsehood, and do not narrate to me a hadith that you heard from someone else? (Meaning, only narrate what you directly heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.) Ibn Absa said: Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Indeed, Allah Almighty says: Surely My love will be obligatory for those who love each other for My sake, My love will be obligatory for those who visit each other for My sake, My love will be obligatory for those who spend on each other for My sake, and My love will be obligatory for those who help each other for My sake.
