✍ Written by: Imran Ayoob Lahori

Wearing trousers (or lower garments) below the ankles is haram, and the evidences are as follows:

① Hadith of Abdullah bin Umar

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

من جر ثوبه خيلاء لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامة
“Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.”
[Bukhari: 5784, Kitāb al-Libās: Bāb man jarr izārahu min ghayri khuyalāʾ]

② Hadith of Abu Hurairah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

ما أسفل من الكعبين من الإزار ففى النار
“Whatever of the lower garment is below the ankles is in the Fire.”
[Bukhari: 5787, Kitāb al-Libās: Bāb mā asfala min al-kaʿbayn fahuwa fī al-nār]

③ Hadith of Abu Hurairah

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“A man from the Children of Israel, wearing a garment while being proud of himself, walking arrogantly with his hair combed, was swallowed by the earth. He will continue to sink therein, writhing, until the Day of Resurrection.”

In another narration:
“He was dragging his garment while walking, so Allah caused the earth to swallow him.”
[Bukhari: 5789, 5790, Kitāb al-Libās: Bāb man jarr thawbahu min al-khuyalāʾ]
